A mysterious Android Pulse app appeared on Pixels. It was an app without an icon – just an empty square – and after clicking on the details, also a description that few understood. It’s called Android Pulse and it’s a system service directly from Google. You certainly don’t have to be afraid of it. What is Android Pulse and what is it for? The Android Pulse app (in the system, it appears under the package com.google.android.apps.pulse) is purely a system matter. It has no interface that you can launch – in the phone settings, you’ll find it only as a plain “Pulse” item, but this time with an icon (an inconspicuous green one resembling a heart rate monitor). You can’t do anything with it yourself. What it does is revealed by the convoluted description in the Play Store. According to Google, the app „facilitates the distribution of rules for detecting anomalies in critical system resource consumption by the Android operating system and installed applications”. Simply put, it’s a diagnostic tool that monitors whether the system or any of the applications are consuming an disproportionate amount of battery, processor power, or memory. Google can use it to send updated rules to phones, according to which such anomalies are recognized. This is quite a similar situation to when we described the Android Developer Verifier system app. We also wrote about it after it started appearing on some Android phones without proper clarification of what it actually does. The app has been in the system for a long time, but only now has it popped up for users The timing is interesting. According to the APKMirror database, the app has been in the system since this March and has seven older versions, with the Play Store reporting over ten million downloads. So, the Pulse itself isn’t new, but rather the fact that it appeared for the first time as an update that can be manually installed – Pixel owners noticed this over the weekend, as reported by 9to5Google. It’s a bit surprising that Google didn’t use its usual Google System Updates channel, through which it quietly distributes similar system components. There might also be a connection with Android 17. This is because it was the first to bring stricter memory limits for individual applications to Pixels – the system will henceforth slow down and, in extreme cases, terminate an application that consumes more memory than it is allowed. Monitoring “critical system resource consumption” would fit into this puzzle. The main point is that Android Pulse is a verified app directly from Google and poses no risk to your phone. While it cannot be uninstalled or opened, it doesn’t do anything noticeable on its own – it runs quietly in the background and helps Google fine-tune system performance.
