Chinese Xiaomi has expanded its smart home offering with a new water leak sensor, the Water Guard 2, which will first target the domestic market. The device is currently in a crowdfunding campaign on the Xiaomi Youpin platform, where interested parties can purchase it for 59 yuan (approximately 175 CZK).

Rapid detection of minimal leaks

The Xiaomi Water Guard 2 features a pair of probes on the bottom side that can detect water at a height of just 0.5 millimeters. Such sensitive settings allow for the detection of water leaks in their initial phase, significantly reducing the risk of greater damage. The upper part of the sensor contains another two recessed probes that react to flowing water – for example, when a pipe above the sensor is leaking.

Triple warning against damage

The sensor offers three ways to alert to a detected leak. The primary method is audible and visual signaling directly on the device – a built-in buzzer and LED diode help quickly locate the leak. The system also works even if the internet connection is lost. The second method is a notification in the Xiaomi Home app, which allows for remote monitoring and setting the alert frequency. The third option is integration with other smart devices in the home that can play a warning sound (such as smart alarms).

Three-year maintenance-free endurance

Thanks to the use of a CR2450 button cell battery and optimized power consumption, the Xiaomi Water Guard 2 promises a battery life of up to 3 years. The device also offers an IP67 protection rating, so it can easily handle dusty and humid environments typical for places with a risk of water leaks. The sensor supports Xiaomi HyperOS Connect for easy integration with the smart home ecosystem.

Who is the sensor suitable for?

The Xiaomi Water Guard 2 will be particularly appreciated by owners of homes and apartments with risky areas – the space under washing machines, dishwashers, boilers, or near water pipes. It is also suitable for basements prone to leaks or for monitoring aquariums and swimming pools. Thanks to remote notifications, it is ideal for owners of cottages and recreational properties who need to keep track of the property’s status remotely.

Whether the Xiaomi Water Guard 2 will reach the European market has not yet been confirmed by the manufacturer. I dare to estimate that the product would eventually cost around three hundred crowns in our market.

Would you use such a water leak sensor in your home?
