An Offer You Can't (or Can) Refuse: PS Plus with a Discount for Angry Players

  • After the announcement of the end of physical games, players started canceling PS Plus, and Sony is responding with discounts up to 50%
  • Most often, it's 3 months of PS Plus Extra for half price; some were offered 25% off the Premium annual plan by Sony
  • However, the offer doesn't go out to everyone immediately, and it barely applies to the cheapest Essential plan

The end of physical games, which Sony announced starting January 2028, is still reverberating — and some players have decided to vote with their wallets. Canceling PS Plus subscriptions is a blow the company feels, as subscriptions have become a goldmine for them. So, they are pulling the emergency brake in the form of discounts, which, with a good dose of irony, can be called “an offer you can’t refuse.”

When You Knock on the Door with a Cancellation

According to experiences shared by players on Reddit, the scenario repeats: the moment you try to cancel your subscription, Sony pulls out a coupon. Most often, it offers 3 months of PS Plus Extra for half price; some received 25% off the annual Premium plan. This isn’t entirely new — Sony sent similar retention discounts before — but the amount of savings is now noticeably higher than usual. The catch? The offer doesn’t reach everyone, and not always immediately. And some protesters still refused it; for them, the principle outweighs a few saved crowns.

Taking with One Hand, Offering a Coupon with the Other

And here’s the point that I find most telling. Sony is tightening the screws with one hand — the end of physical discs, PS Plus price increases, and hinted further price hikes — and with the other, it’s pushing a discount coupon on you so you don’t accidentally escape its ecosystem. Subscriptions are crucial for the company right now, as discs are disappearing and consoles are selling for more due to expensive memory. A small bonus for the vigilant at the end: whoever cancels today and returns in a few months will already be paying higher, current prices — and the cheapest Essential plan is practically unaffected by the discounts.

Would you be persuaded by the discount, or is the end of physical discs a line you won’t cross?
