Google has released a new beta version of Android Auto 14.8, which prepares the ground for the future replacement of Google Assistant with the more advanced AI co-driver Gemini. As reported by 9to5Google, the most visible change is the renaming of the “Assistant” section in settings to “Digital Assistant”, clearly indicating the planned transition to the new technology.

Preparation for Gemini’s Arrival

Although the name of the section in settings has changed, functionally everything remains the same for now – it is still a shortcut to Google Assistant settings. However, new strings like settings_gemini_settings_title have appeared in the application code, confirming that Google is actively preparing to deploy Gemini in vehicles.

How Gemini will work within Android Auto was demonstrated by Google two months ago in an official preview. It will primarily allow drivers to communicate using natural language, enabling them to better focus on driving. The Californian tech giant showed how the new AI assistant can handle more complex requests, such as finding a specific charging station, or how it can facilitate communication by integrating with messaging apps.

New Shortcut in Maps

AndroidSage then noticed a new briefcase icon next to the search bar in Google Maps, which serves as a quick shortcut for navigating to work. It is expected that a similar shortcut will also be available for navigating home. This feature appears independently of the Android Auto 14.8 version.

Availability

Android Auto 14.8 beta is already available for download, while the stable version Android Auto 14.7 is starting to reach a wider audience. Gemini itself is not yet available with this version, but its arrival is expected in the near future.

How much are you looking forward to Gemini inside Android Auto?
