Headphones that could look around their surroundings via built-in cameras have been speculated about since 2024. Now, however, it seems we’ll have to wait longer than expected – according to leaker Kosutami, Apple has suspended development of AirPods with cameras.

What were AirPods with cameras supposed to do?

The idea is not new. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has been talking about it for about two years and describes it consistently: each earbud would house a tiny infrared camera similar to the one iPhone uses for Face ID. However, it wouldn’t be a camera in the usual sense – the cameras were not meant to take photos or videos, but rather to relay an image of what’s happening around you to Siri. This would give Apple Intelligence “eyes” even when your phone is tucked away in your pocket.

What would be its practical use? Besides visual intelligence that could describe your surroundings or recognize objects within them, the main discussion was about smarter spatial audio in conjunction with Vision Pro glasses – you turn your head, and the sound adapts to the direction you’re looking. Air gestures, which the camera would read from movement in its field of view, were also on the table.

Why did Apple halt development?

Kosutami did not provide a specific reason. In a post on X, he immediately clarified his earlier claim that the project was “at an end” to “suspended.” As MacRumors reported, several explanations are possible – from a shortage of certain components to the simple possibility that Apple is not yet satisfied with the quality of visual intelligence for Siri. According to earlier leaks, the headphones were supposed to arrive in the first half of this year, but the deadline was extended due to the development of the new Siri. Interestingly, as recently as May, Bloomberg wrote about an advanced testing phase, so it seems they weren’t far from the goal.

Is this the definitive end?

It’s more of a pause than a definitive end. The leaker himself emphasized that the project is not canceled for good and Apple could return to the headphones in the future – when, however, no one said, and no new timeline exists yet. A pinch of caution is also in order: Kosutami has been wrong about AirPods timing in the past (for example, when he promised the early arrival of AirPods Pro 3 in 2024), so take this news with a grain of salt.
