Are you looking forward to the Mapy.com app for Garmin watches? We have bad news for you

Are you expecting the Mapy.com app to arrive on your Garmin sports watch? Then you probably won’t be happy. The service’s developers confirmed via the Instagram social network that support for Garmin watches is not currently planned. The news comes less than a year after the app launched on Google Wear OS and Apple watchOS platforms.

Garmin will have to wait, existing platforms are the priority

In an Instagram post, the Mapy.com team explained why Garmin watch owners won’t see support anytime soon. “For those interested in Garmin watch support: it’s not currently planned. Although we would love to have Mapy.com on all watches in the world, support for this platform is technically quite specific. We are now fully focused on watchOS and WearOS,” the developers stated.

And it makes sense. Garmin watches use their own operating system, which differs significantly from competing platforms. Developing the app would therefore require a different approach and considerable resources.

It has been working on Wear OS and watchOS for a year

The Mapy.com app for smartwatches debuted in April last year. At that time, it became available in the Google Play Store for Wear OS watches and the App Store for Apple Watch. Users can track their location, route, and navigation directly on their wrist without having to take their phone out of their pocket.

The app also offers a Tracker function for an overview of activity, including duration and distance traveled. Detailed map data is also available with the option to switch to a winter variant, which skiers and cross-country skiers will appreciate. However, to use all features, a Mapy.com premium subscription for 249 CZK per year is required.

Alternatives exist for Garmin

Garmin watch owners will therefore have to continue relying on alternative solutions. Watches of this brand offer their own TOPO map data, which users can download directly to the device.

It is also possible to transfer a route from Mapy.com to the watch’s wrist using a GPX file. Simply export it from the mobile app and upload it to Garmin Connect.
