Sony for reasonable money is somewhat of an oxymoron that customers have grown accustomed to with this brand. However, with code ALZADNY50, the Bravia XR-85X90L is now 38,499 CZK, which is half the current price and even significantly below the initial price of 59,990 CZK from 2023. For an 85″ Sony with a Cognitive XR processor and local dimming, this is an unexpected offer.

Quick summary:
Makes sense if you have a large living room, want premium Sony image processing, and plan to connect the TV with a PS5.
⚠️ Consider that it’s a 2023 model year – it lacks newer features and only has 2× HDMI 2.1 (not all 4 ports).
💡 For 38,499 CZK, it’s an 85″ Full Array LED Sony TV with complete gaming features for PS5.

What you get for 38 thousand

The Bravia X90L is a Full Array LED TV with local dimming – meaning LED backlighting divided into zones, where each lights up independently according to the content on the screen. It’s not the most modern Mini LED, but the zones are denser than with standard LEDs, and the resulting contrast is convincing. Image processing is handled by the Cognitive XR processor, which Sony also uses in more expensive models. 4K resolution, 120Hz panel, Dolby Vision and HDR10 support – equipment without compromise for movies, sports, and gaming.

For PS5 owners, this TV is certified as “Perfect for PlayStation 5”. When the console is connected, optimal HDR tone mapping and Auto Genre mode, which switches according to the game type, are automatically activated. 4K at 120 Hz, VRR, ALLM, and Dolby Vision gaming are available. A minor but important note – only 2 of the 4 HDMI ports are version 2.1, the remaining two are HDMI 2.0. For most households, this is not a problem, but if you want to connect a PS5, Xbox Series X, and a gaming PC simultaneously at full speed, keep this in mind.

What’s worth mentioning before buying

Several realistic observations are repeated in user reviews on Alza. The main positive – the price/performance ratio in this promotion is exceptional, and owners of older Sony models confirm the system’s responsiveness and image quality. Minor compromises: built-in Wi-Fi and Ethernet have weaker throughput, so for demanding 4K streaming services, it’s good to consider that a limit might be reached sooner than with more modern models. The remote control is not backlit, which is sometimes missed when used in a dark room in the evening.

In terms of sound, it offers 30W X-Balanced speakers with positional tweeters on the sides – sufficient for regular viewing, but with an 85″ TV, you’ll eventually reach for a soundbar anyway. Sony also offers the Acoustic Center Sync function, where the TV’s speakers serve as the soundbar’s center channel.

Verdict

The Sony XR-85X90L for 38,499 CZK makes sense for a large living room with at least a 3.5-meter viewing distance. It’s a 2023 model, so don’t expect the latest AI features of this year’s flagships, but the core image quality from Sony remains. A 50% discount from 76,998 CZK and almost a third below the original launch price from 2023 – if you wanted an 85″ Sony, a better moment won’t come along anytime soon.

Do you think it’s still worth paying extra for a premium brand today, or can you get comparable picture quality with more affordable models?
