Breakthrough news for Garmin watches! Data sharing with the Google ecosystem will now be possible

  • Garmin is expanding the compatibility of its smartwatches with Google Health Connect
  • Data transfer will unfortunately be one-way only – from Garmin Connect to Google Health Connect
  • Some advanced metrics like Body Battery or Training Load will remain available only in the Garmin app

Garmin smartwatch owners will finally get a long-awaited feature. The manufacturer of popular sports and outdoor watches has published details on its website about the upcoming integration with the Google Health Connect platform. This new feature will allow synchronization of health and sports data between the Garmin Connect app and other applications using Google Health Connect. However, the implementation comes with one significant limitation.

A one-way street for data

Although Google announced the integration at the May I/O 2025 conference with a promise to launch in June, the feature is not yet available. Garmin has now updated its pages with details about the upcoming connection. The most important information is that synchronization will work only one-way – data will be transferred from the Garmin Connect app to Google Health Connect, but not the other way around.

This means that if you use multiple devices to track activity (for example, Galaxy Watch or Pixel Watch smartwatches during the day and Garmin during sports activities), Garmin Connect will not have a complete overview of your total physical activity. This limitation can significantly and negatively affect some Garmin features that rely on a comprehensive analysis of your health status and activities.

What data will be possible to synchronize?

According to information from the Garmin website, a relatively wide range of data will be transferable, including both activity and health data. Synchronized data will include:

Activity data:

  • Active and total calories burned
  • Cycling cadence
  • Distance
  • Floors climbed
  • Heart rate data
  • Speed information
  • Step count
  • Swim strokes

Health data:

  • Body fat
  • Calories burned
  • Floors climbed
  • Heart rate data
  • Sleep data
  • Steps and distance walked
  • Weight

What is missing from synchronization?

On the other hand, some advanced metrics will remain exclusive to the Garmin ecosystem. Proprietary features like Body Battery, Training Load, or Running Dynamics will not be part of the synchronization. Garmin also specifically mentions that it will not synchronize data such as running power, cadence, or sweat loss.

Regarding sleep data, it is not yet clear whether it will include advanced metrics such as blood oxygen saturation, body temperature, or heart rate variability. Garmin’s documentation only mentions the general term “sleep data” without further specification.

When can we expect it?

Although Google originally promised to launch the integration in June 2025, it is already July and the feature is still not available. Neither Garmin nor Google have yet set an exact date for when the synchronization will be launched, but given the website update, it can be assumed that it will happen in the near future.

Despite the one-way synchronization, this is a significant step forward for Garmin device users. They will be able to use their data in a wider range of applications supporting the Google Health Connect platform, which can improve their overall overview of their health status and physical activity.

Will you miss some advanced Garmin metrics in Google Health Connect?
