Smart locators have been gaining popularity in recent years – simply attach them to keys, a wallet, or luggage, and in case of loss, you can easily track their location via mobile. Until now, the market has been dominated primarily by the Apple AirTag, whose price many considered an unnecessarily high investment. Xiaomi is now introducing its own solution called Xiaomi Tag, which offers similar features at a significantly more favorable price.

Compact Body with Long Battery Life

The Xiaomi Tag weighs just 10 grams and, thanks to its hanging loop, you can easily attach it to keys, a backpack, or even a suitcase. The design meets IP67 protection rating, so the locator will survive contact with dust and short-term immersion in water. Power is provided by a replaceable CR2032 battery, which, according to the manufacturer, lasts more than one year of normal use.

Support for Both Major Ecosystems

The main advantage of the Xiaomi Tag over its competitors is its compatibility with both platforms – it works with both Apple Find My (iPhone and iPad with iOS 14.5 and newer) and Google Android Find Hub (devices with Android 9 and newer). However, both networks cannot be used simultaneously; you must choose one of them during pairing.

The locator sends an encrypted Bluetooth signal, which is picked up by nearby devices connected to the given network. These anonymously upload the location to the cloud, where you can see it in the respective application. A lost mode is also available, in which you can add contact details – the finder can then use NFC or an automatic pop-up to find out how to contact you. Apple Find My users can also take advantage of forgetfulness alerts, which warn you when you move away from an item outside of usual locations.

Xiaomi has also not forgotten about protection against unwanted tracking. If an unknown locator moves with you for an extended period, your phone will alert you.

Significantly Cheaper Than AirTag

The price comparison clearly favors Xiaomi. While one Apple AirTag costs 790 Kč and a four-pack comes to 2,690 Kč, you can get a Xiaomi Tag for 399 Kč, or 1,299 Kč for a four-pack. For the price of one AirTag, you get three Xiaomi locators, which will be especially appreciated by families or those who want to secure multiple items at once.

Functionally, both devices are similar – they offer remote finding, lost mode, and privacy protection. The AirTag has the advantage of a UWB chip for precise short-range navigation, which the Xiaomi Tag lacks.

It is also likely that the AirTag will offer better range. However, tests will show how significant the difference will be.

Would you get a Xiaomi Tag, or do you prefer the more expensive AirTag?
