One of the most anticipated features of the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra has apparently not escaped the attention of competitors. According to information from the well-known leaker Digital Chat Station, Chinese smartphone manufacturers have started testing their own hardware solution to protect display content from prying eyes of passersby. The technology is expected to work similarly to the upcoming Privacy Display from the South Korean company.

Hardware Solution Instead of Films

Unlike classic privacy films or software filters, this is a technology integrated directly into the AMOLED panel. The display can significantly darken when viewed from a side angle, so bystanders won’t see what’s on your screen. Practical applications are obvious – whether it’s viewing sensitive messages on public transport, entering a password in a cafe, or using a banking app in public.

Xiaomi, Vivo, and Others Want a Similar Feature

According to Digital Chat Station, hardware privacy protection could appear in flagship phones scheduled for release around September. Candidates include the Xiaomi 18 series with the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 chipset or the Vivo X500 with the Dimensity 9600 processor. In October, models like Oppo Find X10 and Honor Magic 10 could follow, and there’s also speculation about OnePlus 16 or Realme GT 9 Pro.

It is not yet clear which manufacturers will actually implement the feature. It will likely only be available on top-tier models like Pro Max or Ultra – just like with Samsung, where the Privacy Display will be exclusive to the S26 Ultra model.

We’ve Already Seen Privacy Display in Action

Although Samsung will officially unveil the Galaxy S26 Ultra only this Wednesday at the Unpacked event, we’ve already seen the Privacy Display feature live. Dubai-based YouTuber Sahil Karoul managed to acquire the phone in advance from a local electronics store and shared his first impressions on social media. The published video clearly shows how the screen significantly darkens when viewed from an angle.

If Chinese manufacturers succeed in implementing similar technology, hardware-level privacy protection could become a standard feature of premium smartphones. And that would certainly not be a bad thing.

Would you appreciate the Privacy Display feature on brands other than Samsung?
