Are you writing in Google Docs, but prefer to have your text edited by Claude rather than Gemini? Now you no longer have to transfer paragraphs to a separate chat and copy answers back. Anthropic has launched the public beta of the Claude for Google Workspace add-on, which adds the assistant directly next to the open file. In the sidebar, you give it a request, and Claude can directly edit the document, spreadsheet, or presentation.

Rewrite a paragraph, complete a formula, and preserve the appearance

In Docs, according to Anthropic, Claude is supposed to correct spelling, rewrite selected passages, or change the style of individual parts, without disrupting existing formatting. You can thus entrust it with editing a specific paragraph and let it work directly within the document you are writing. Preserving text formatting is a practical promise: after the assistant’s intervention, there should be no need to reassemble the document’s appearance.

In Sheets, assistance shifts to formulas and compiling tables based on file content. Additional documents or spreadsheets can also be added as source material for new output. For Slides, Claude can create slides using existing layouts and themes or highlight elements that may need updating. So, the task doesn’t have to start from a blank page: the assistant builds on what you’ve already started.

You can review changes first

You don’t have to accept direct file edits blindly. The “ask before edits” mode shows proposed changes before they are made, so you retain control over what actually gets into the document.

You can also open a Google file next to the chat

The connection also works in reverse. New connectors allow you to insert a link to a file from Docs, Sheets, or Slides directly into a conversation with Claude and edit it from there. The file opens in a panel next to the chat, where you can work on it simultaneously with the assistant. Access respects existing sharing permissions in Google: Claude does not gain broader rights than your account has.

Add-on requires a paid Claude subscription

Claude for Google Workspace can be found in the Google Workspace Marketplace. The beta is open to subscribers of Claude Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise; the free version of Claude does not have access. Gemini already handles many similar tasks in Google applications. This new feature will primarily appeal to those who use Claude and want to work with it in their Google files.

However, it is still a beta. Anthropic warns that some features currently have limitations or do not always work reliably. When working with a finished document, the option to review edits before approval comes in handy.

Would you prefer Claude or Gemini in Google Docs?
