Connecting a Googlebook with a phone has a catch. Key features require Android 17

  • File sharing, notifications, and app transfer from phone require Android 17
  • Some banking apps and apps with protected video cannot be streamed even then

Open files from your phone on your laptop, continue unfinished work, or control a mobile app on a larger screen. Such connectivity is one of the main attractions of new Googlebooks. However, an Android phone alone is not enough: Google confirmed in the reviewer’s guide that these features require Android 17.

Laptop features also depend on phone updates

The condition also applies to synchronized notifications. So, if you want to monitor notifications from your mobile on your Googlebook or browse your phone’s storage from it, you need the corresponding system version on your mobile. Without it, this entire group of features, including the transfer of in-progress tasks between devices, will remain unavailable.

The problem, however, does not only concern long-outdated phones. Owners of mid-range Galaxy phones and some older flagship models are still waiting for updates. Limited rollout is also underway for Xiaomi, Motorola, and OnePlus.

Banking app may be covered by a privacy screen

Even with the current system, not everything will transfer to the laptop display. Google specifies exceptions for some apps with sensitive content, such as banking, and for apps with DRM-protected video. When attempting to stream them from the phone, a privacy protection screen will be displayed instead of the content.

For apps directly on Googlebook, the processor also matters

Googlebook OS can also run Android apps directly. However, laptop selection comes into play here: models with Intel processors use the x86 architecture, while mobile apps were developed for ARM chips. Google confirmed that not all of them may run smoothly on Intel variants.

Most apps should work, but some more complex applications and games require optimization updates. However, Google has not yet released a specific list of those that do not run smoothly on Intel.

Which phone-to-laptop connectivity feature would you use most often?
