When the 15″ MacBook Air with M3 chip in a configuration of 24 GB RAM and 512 GB SSD arrived on the Czech market last March, it cost 55,990 CZK. That was a price that ranked this notebook among premium machines. However, more than a year and a half has passed since then – and now you can buy it on Datart.cz with discount code 1025EXTRAH10 for 31,491 CZK. A price reduction of almost 25 thousand CZK is interesting in itself, but even more interesting is the comparison with current MacBook Airs with the M4 chip.

M3 vs M4: Is the difference that big?

Apple introduced new MacBook Airs with the M4 chip this year, which was supposed to bring a significant shift. In practice, however, it’s a bit different. According to tests, the difference between M3 and M4 is roughly 30–40%. This number looks impressive, but in real-world use – i.e., when working with documents, browsing the web, editing smaller photos, or even basic video editing – you will practically not notice the difference.

The main reason? MacBook Air does not have active cooling. Passive design means that the chip cannot run at full performance for extended periods because it would overheat. Tests show that the performance in the MacBook Air with M4 is actually slightly higher than with M3, but the difference is most noticeable during short-term peak loads – for example, when exporting video. For everyday tasks, the difference is minimal.

But what else does the MBA M4 bring? Primarily, a better FaceTime camera with higher resolution and a slightly improved Neural Engine for AI tasks. But that’s all – no revolutionary changes in architecture, design, or battery.

Price vs configuration: M3 wins here

For a similar price as the discounted 15″ MacBook Air with M3 (i.e., around 32 thousand CZK), you can also buy a new model with the M4 chip. The problem, however, is that for this money you only get the basic configuration: 16 GB RAM and 256 GB SSD. And that’s simply not enough for most users.

256GB storage is practically not enough for anyone today – if you work with photos, video, or have more than a few games and larger applications, you’ll fill up your disk within a few months.

In contrast, the 15″ MacBook Air with M3 in Datart’s current offer has 24 GB RAM and 512GB SSD. This is a configuration that will last you at least 4 – 5 years without major issues.

M5 is knocking on the door

Apple recently introduced the M5 chip in iPad Pro and MacBook Pro 14″, which means that next year we can expect a MacBook Air with M5. This should bring a more significant leap in performance – especially thanks to an improved Neural Engine and better support for AI features.

So, if you’re not in a hurry and can wait another year, it might be wiser to wait for the M5. But if you need a notebook now and don’t want to pay more for a symbolic upgrade in the form of M4, the 15″ MacBook Air with M3 for 31,491 CZK is a great choice.
