Digg

The popular platform Digg, which was one of the largest internet communities around 2008, is returning after years in a new form. Behind its revival are Kevin Rose (Digg founder) and Alexis Ohanian (Reddit co-founder). The goal of the new version of Digg is to create a space for real human interactions while also countering the growing number of internet bots and artificial intelligence.

The test application for iOS is already running in the closed Groundbreakers program. Users can browse content using various filters – most popular, newest, trending, and others.

The platform also currently offers a limited number of communities in categories such as art, entertainment, finance, food, science, sports, and technology. Users can upvote (i.e., give a post a positive vote / like), downvote (the opposite – dislike), and comment on individual posts, similar to Reddit.

Digg will include AI, but it is only meant to serve users

The new platform is also intended to use artificial intelligence to automatically summarize articles at a basic level, but the capability of this feature should expand in the future.

The creators also plan to introduce methods for user verification, particularly zero-knowledge proofs, which allow proving the truth of various claims without having to directly reveal the information itself. The goal is to ensure the authenticity of discussions, thus avoiding scenarios where bots would infiltrate human communities.

Digg has also learned from its past issues with gamification and manipulation of popularity rankings, which are a result of the aforementioned upvotes and downvotes. These will now refresh every 24 hours, which should prevent the formation of small groups of users who would manipulate content in any way.

Digg žebříčky popularity

Although the application seems promising so far, the main challenge will be convincing users to switch from the popular Reddit to the newly revived Digg. The creators therefore promise the possibility of creating entirely custom communities in the future, the form of which artificial intelligence is also intended to help design.

Are you considering switching to Digg when it becomes public?
