Imagine that instead of a lengthy search for “cafes near Charles Bridge,” you simply select an area on the map and ask: “Where can I find a good place to eat here?” This is exactly what Google is currently working on. The Android Authority editorial team discovered an upcoming feature in the latest version of the Google app that will connect the Gemini assistant with Google Maps.

Selecting an area instead of typing addresses

The new feature will add the ability to attach a specific map cutout to a query in Gemini. After tapping the “Maps” button in the attachments menu, a full-screen map interface will open, where you can zoom and pan to the desired location. By tapping the “Explore this area” button, you can then attach the selected area to your query.

There will also be an option to “Use precise location” to utilize your current location. Gemini will then generate a response based on the selected location via the Google Maps extension.

Conversation instead of filters

Compared to classic Maps search, integration with Gemini offers a conversational approach. You don’t have to limit yourself to categories like “restaurants” or “cafes.” You can ask, for example, whether a given location is safe for an evening walk, what the rental prices are in the area, or where to find the nearest 24/7 pharmacy.

The new tool is not yet fully functional – during testing, Gemini recommended places from the entire city instead of the selected area. However, Google is clearly working on the final tuning. When the new feature will reach users is not yet clear.
