Today, Apple made the Hearing Aid feature available to Czech users, which turns AirPods Pro 2 and Pro 3 into a full-fledged aid for people with mild to moderate hearing loss. Simply update the firmware, and the headphones will start dynamically amplifying ambient sounds in real-time — during calls, watching movies, and even casual conversations over coffee.

How it works

The foundation is the Hearing Test, which the user performs themselves using AirPods and a compatible iPhone or iPad. It takes about five minutes, and at the end, you receive a clear overview, including an audiogram for each ear. This is saved in the Health app, and if needed, you can send it to a specialist doctor.

Based on the test results, AirPods create a personal hearing profile, which the Hearing Aid uses to adapt the surroundings to the specific hearing of its wearer. The same profile is then automatically applied to music playback, FaceTime calls, and video across all Apple devices.

A quiet revolution in the hearing aid market

The feature has considerable potential in the Czech Republic. Traditional hearing aids from specialized manufacturers are priced in the tens of thousands of crowns per piece and usually require an examination by a specialist. Apple, instead, offers a medically certified, over-the-counter solution at the price of headphones that many people already carry in their pockets.

Of course, it has its limits. AirPods cannot replace medical diagnostics, are not sufficient for severe hearing impairments, and battery life is not designed for all-day wear. However, for millions of people with milder difficulties who have previously avoided traditional hearing aids due to cost or stigma, this is finally a realistic option.

Would you or someone around you use AirPods as a hearing aid?
