Samsung’s top model has been stuck at 5,000 mAh for years, while Chinese competitors are stuffing flagship phones with well over 7,000 mAh. According to the Korean leaker known as kro, Samsung actually tested a similarly large battery for the Galaxy S27 Ultra – but ultimately shelved this variant.

Why is Samsung backing down from the 7,000mAh battery?

The information was brought by a Korean leaker, who goes by kro on the X network. According to him, Samsung was supposed to test no less than five different S27 Ultra prototypes, and one of them achieved a battery over 7,000 mAh only because the S Pen completely disappeared from the body. However, the stylus remains the main distinguishing feature of the Ultra series, so no one really expects its removal.

The second reason is said to be caution. While silicon-carbon cells can pack more energy into the same space, Samsung reportedly keeps the silicon content low to ensure the battery lasts longer in good condition. However, no one has confirmed that this was directly the reason why the massive capacity was dropped.

How big will the battery ultimately be?

Even the more modest variant would be an improvement. According to leaks, Samsung is aiming for 5,700 to 6,000 mAh, which would finally break the eternal 5,000 mAh ceiling from the Galaxy S20 era after six generations. Moreover, the new generation is not expected to swell due to the bulkier battery – the transition to a silicon-carbon cell is supposed to take care of that. However, it still won’t be enough for paper records. Brands like vivo, OPPO, or Xiaomi today commonly exceed the 6,000 mAh mark, so even after the improvement, the Korean company would still be playing it safe.
