How to get a child to move more? Garmin vívofit jr. 3 solves this with gamification – steps turn into points, completed tasks unlock games, and the motivation is a popular superhero. The tracker has been on the market since 2020, but it still remains one of the most popular kids’ trackers.

A year without charging

The main advantage over smartwatches: the replaceable battery lasts a whole year. It just works. “It doesn’t need charging, we’ll see how long the battery lasts – according to the manual, supposedly one year,” a customer confirms.

5 ATM water resistance means the tracker can survive hand washing, showering, and swimming in a pool. For an active child, this is a must.

Parental control via app

In the vívofit jr. app, parents can set tasks (“brush your teeth”, “clean your room”) and rewards for completing them. One customer describes practical use: “You can set exact times when it reminds children of an activity – we use it to remind them when to leave after-school care.” Synchronization works via Bluetooth with both iOS and Android.

Note: the tracker uses its own vívofit jr. app, not the full Garmin Connect. For children, this is sufficient, but parents accustomed to the Garmin ecosystem might be surprised.

Small display, poor readability

The 0.78″ display is tiny for an adult, but appropriate for a child’s hand. The problem is readability: “It’s dimly lit, you have to press it to read the time, and even then it’s not perfectly visible,” a customer complains. Another reviewer returned the tracker immediately due to the small display. The transflective MIP display saves battery, but at the cost of poorer backlighting.

The tracker may not last forever

One customer reports that the strap tore after a year and couldn’t hold the watch in its case. At a price under two thousand and with intensive children’s use, this isn’t entirely surprising, but you have to account for it. Replacement straps can be bought, so it’s not the end of the world.

The original price was 1,790 CZK, and now with code ALZADNY10, it costs 1,611 CZK. In 2020, at its launch, it cost 2,499 CZK, so the price has gradually decreased. A rating of 4.6 out of 5 from 57 customers is solid. For younger children who don’t yet need a full-fledged smartwatch, the vívofit jr. 3 is a sensible choice – it motivates movement, teaches responsibility, and lasts a year without charging.
