While ChatGPT and Claude users have long grown accustomed to the convenience of native desktop applications, Google Gemini enthusiasts have so far had to make do with a web interface. However, that could soon change. According to Bloomberg, Google has quietly launched closed beta testing of the Gemini app for macOS.

Early Version with Limited Features

Google has reportedly sent invitations to selected users who can now test the first version of the app. In an accompanying message, the company reportedly states that it is an early version intended for feedback collection. “This is an early version of the Gemini app for Mac intended for your feedback and will only include key features from other clients, not all,” Google told testers.

The app’s interface reportedly looks similar to the iPhone and iPad versions. Testers have access to basic functions for generating images, videos, and multimedia content using models like Nano Banana, Veo, and Lyria. Access to conversation history and the ability to search the web are also included.

Desktop Intelligence: AI will see your screen

More interesting, however, is a feature that appeared in the app’s code. It’s called Desktop Intelligence and should allow Gemini to see what’s on your screen and interact with the content of open applications. Google describes this feature as follows:

“When you enable apps for Desktop Intelligence, you allow Gemini to see what you see (such as screen context) and retrieve content directly from those apps to enhance and personalize your experience, only when you are using Gemini.”

The feature could thus function similarly to screen sharing in Gemini Live on Android. However, it should be noted that this is an early version, and there’s no guarantee that Desktop Intelligence will make it into the final release.

Google Catching Up with Competition

Currently, Google does not offer any dedicated Gemini desktop application – neither for macOS nor for Windows. Computer users can create a Progressive Web App (PWA), but this does not replace a full-fledged native application. Meanwhile, the competition is a step ahead: OpenAI offers ChatGPT for Mac, and Anthropic also has the Claude app available.

When Google plans to officially release the Gemini app for macOS is not yet known. Given that beta testing is just beginning and the app contains only basic features, it can be expected that we will have to wait some time for the final version. The question also remains whether Google is preparing a version for Windows, about which we currently have no information.

Would you welcome a Gemini desktop app for Windows as well?
