You have a chatbot prepare notes or materials as an .md file, you open it – and instead of neat headings, you see a jumble of hashes and asterisks. This is now a thing of the past. Popular Google Docs (and even Google Drive) have learned to work natively with the Markdown format, so you can directly read, edit, and share such a file with colleagues.

While it’s not entirely new, in 2024 we wrote about Markdown import and export in Docs. But that was just a conversion. The file became a classic Google document, formatting often got messed up along the way, comments disappeared, and files split into multiple copies. Now, an .md file will always remain an .md file.

Why does anyone even care about Markdown?

Markdown is plain text where structure is indicated by a few symbols: a hash creates a heading, asterisks make text bold, a hyphen creates a bullet point. Both humans and machines can read it, and it doesn’t carry any bloat like Word files. That’s why large language models have adopted it, commonly writing their responses in it, including tables and lists.

Today, instructions for AI agents or notes in applications like Obsidian are also created in Markdown. Chandu Thota from Google summarized it by saying that the format has become “a common language for humans and AI agents”. Both parties can now work on the same file in Docs without anyone having to write raw syntax.

What works and what doesn’t in Markdown?

Just upload the file to Drive and double-click it. It will open in Docs, where real-time editing, comments, and sharing work just like with a regular document. Drive will also show a rendered preview with clickable links and tables.

However, Markdown logically doesn’t transfer some things. Font colors, highlighting, and text alignment are not saved, and so-called smart chips will turn into plain text or a link. If your formatting gets messed up, version history can help.

The new feature is free for everyone, including personal Google accounts, and nothing needs to be enabled. It’s rolling out starting Monday, but for some users, it will arrive in up to fifteen days.

Will you now open Markdown files in Google Docs?
