Google Gemini can now create an illustrated storybook for you. The result looks surprisingly good

Google is expanding the capabilities of its AI application Gemini with a feature that will appeal primarily to parents of young children and creative users. The new Storybooks feature can create a complete illustrated book, including audio narration, based on text input. The new feature is already available in Czech, both in the mobile app and the web application for computers.

How story creation works

Simply describe any story you can imagine to Gemini, and the application will generate a unique 10-page book with its own illustrations and audio accompaniment. For personalization, you can upload your own photos or files that Gemini will use as a basis for creation.

The application offers a wide range of visual styles – from pixel art and comics to imitations of crocheted creations or claymation animations. There are even coloring books that children can then print and color. The entire feature supports more than 45 languages, including Czech.

With Gemini’s help, we generated a short book in a few minutes for a fictional Martin, who moved out of his parents’ home and had to learn independence. A real university student would probably just laugh at it, but if I were to evaluate the pure AI work, I would give it a thumbs up. The anime style was successful, the incorporation of another fictional character pleasantly surprised me, the book had a certain motivational character, and I did not notice any errors. The phrase “Adulthood was not a scary dragon” is somewhat peculiar, but it cannot be described as directly nonsensical.

Practical application in everyday life

Google itself presents several specific usage scenarios. Parents can use stories to explain complex topics to children – for example, how the solar system works or why it’s important to be kind to a younger sibling. An interesting option is to upload a child’s drawing, which Gemini will transform into an illustrated story.

The feature can also process photos from family trips and create a personalized story from them. Thus, a family can have not only a photo album from a vacation in Paris, but also their own illustrated adventure book.

Who the feature is truly for

Storybooks will find their greatest use among parents of preschool children who are looking for a way to simply explain various topics to their offspring or entertain them with an original story. The feature can also be useful for teachers in kindergartens or primary schools for preparing educational materials.

For regular users without children, it will likely be more of a one-time curiosity than a feature they would use regularly. The quality of generated illustrations and stories corresponds to current AI capabilities – the results are usable, but they will not replace professional illustrators or children’s book writers.

Limitations and practical notes

Each generated book has a fixed 10 pages, which may be too few for some stories, and unnecessarily many for others. The quality of illustrations depends on the chosen style – some look better than others.

The feature is available for free in the basic version of Gemini, but the number of generations may be limited. To access it, simply have the Gemini app on your phone or use the web version on your computer. In both cases, full Czech support is available, including Czech texts in the book and any narration.
