Google is discontinuing the Pixel Studio app. And nobody cares

  • Google is discontinuing the Pixel Studio app less than two years after its launch with the Pixel 9 series.
  • Update v2.3 disables the creation of new images and stickers and directs users to Nano Banana in Gemini.
  • Previously created works will remain accessible, and the basic screenshot editor remains in the app.

Google has been consolidating its AI features under one roof called Gemini for some time now, and is thus gradually saying goodbye to standalone applications it previously scattered across the system. Now it’s Pixel Studio‘s turn, an image generation app that the company launched in 2024 alongside the Pixel 9 series. After the latest update, you can no longer create anything in it.

What the update changes

Version Pixel Studio v2.3, which is now gradually rolling out via the Play Store, disables the main interface for image creation. Instead, you will see a message recommending that you try Nano Banana within Gemini for image generation, and a button that redirects you to the AI assistant app. If you don’t have it installed, your phone will prompt you to do so.

You can still find your existing creations in the app, but nothing new will be added. The simple screenshot editor also remains, although it doesn’t offer anything you couldn’t do in another app. Whether Google will eventually completely delete Pixel Studio from phones or keep it for the editor is not yet clear.

It makes sense

The end of Pixel Studio is not regrettable and frankly makes sense. I myself only launched the app perhaps twice in total, and that was probably just to show readers what it could do. Today, Nano Banana in Gemini handles image generation better and, more importantly, everywhere, not just on selected Pixels.

Will you miss the Pixel Studio app, or have you already switched to Gemini a long time ago?
