Google Messages app learned to turn back time, kind of

You know how it is, sometimes you send a message and only then realize there was a mistake in it, you accidentally sent it to the wrong person, or you simply want to “take it back.” However, if you use the default SMS app in Android, which is Google Messages, it’s somewhat of a problem. Or rather, it was a problem, until now.

New update is already rolling out

With the arrival of a new Google Messages app update, the first users are reporting a change when deleting individual messages. Until now, it worked by selecting a message, clicking the trash can icon, and confirming, which only deleted the message on your device, or rather, your account. This deletion had no effect on the sent text for your contact. Now, the confirmation dialog box is expanded with an option featuring self-explanatory labels – “Delete for everyone” or “Delete for me.”

This new feature is already available through regular updates to the Messages app. So, if it hasn’t reached you yet, try checking the Play Store to see if there’s an update pending. Just a reminder, this feature doesn’t come out of the blue; Google has been testing it since May of this year. Unsurprisingly, it uses the secure RCS protocol, and currently, this option is only available if both parties are using the Google Messages app. So, if you want to delete a message sent to, for example, an iPhone, you’re out of luck.
