The Google Photos app is expanding with new AI-powered creative features. As Google itself announced, users will soon be able to try transforming static photos into short videos or transforming images into various artistic styles. In addition, a new central hub for creative tools will be added. However, the new feature is unfortunately currently only available on American phones, with gradual expansion to other countries, including the Czech Republic, expected in the coming months at the earliest.

Google Photos brings your images to life

The most significant new feature is Photo to video, which can transform your static images into short six-second videos. The tool is powered by the generative model Veo 2 and works similarly to the recently introduced feature in Gemini (which, however, relies on the more advanced Veo 3 model). Simply select a photo from your gallery and choose one of two modes – “Subtle movements” or “I’m feeling lucky”. The system then brings the photo to life with subtle animations, such as an eye blink, hair movement, or a smile.

Remix transforms your photos into works of art

The second interesting new feature is Remix, which allows you to transform your photos into various artistic styles. Do you want to see yourself, your friends, or pets as anime characters, comic book heroes, hand-drawn sketches, or 3D animations? Simply select a photo and choose your preferred style, and the result will be ready to share in a few seconds.

New hub for creative tools

To make using the new features as intuitive as possible, Google is adding a new Create tab to its app. This will serve as a central place for all creative tools, including Photo to video, Remix, collages, highlight reels, and more. The tab will become available in the US during August, and Google promises to continuously update it based on user feedback.

Google doesn’t forget about security

At the end of the blog post, Google assures that all videos and photos created using the new Photo to video and Remix features will contain an invisible digital watermark SynthID (similar to images edited with the Reimagine feature). Additionally, videos will also include a visible watermark for greater transparency. Google also states that it conducted thorough security testing before launching the new features to prevent potential misuse.

Are you looking forward to the new creative tools in Google Photos?
