Google is set to significantly simplify public transport payments through its Google Wallet. The new Express Transit Card feature, discovered by Android Authority before its launch, will allow passengers to pay for fares by simply tapping their phone to a terminal, without needing to unlock the device or confirm payment with a fingerprint. What’s more, it will allow setting a specific preferred card. For Czech users, who already use this payment method in cities like Brno or Ostrava, this could be a welcome improvement.

How will Express Transit Card work?

The principle of the new feature lies in the ability to set up a dedicated payment card exclusively for public transport payments. This card will be separate from your usual default card that you use for standard contactless payments in stores. Once you set up the Express Transit Card, when boarding a tram or bus, simply tap your locked phone to the reader and the payment will be processed automatically.

Google Wallet currently offers the option to disable verification for transport payments even in the Czech Republic, but the upcoming Express Transit Card feature will go a step further. It will allow users to precisely define which card will be used, adding another layer of control over expenses.

Security remains a priority

Although the Express Transit Card will allow payments without verification, security risks will be minimal. The feature is intended exclusively for small amount payments on public transport and at stops. Terminals in shops or ATMs will not accept this special card without standard verification. In case of phone loss, the card can always be immediately blocked via the web interface or by contacting the bank.

When will the feature appear in the Czech Republic?

The Express Transit Card was discovered in the code of Google Wallet version 25.43.826060251 during application analysis. The feature is currently in the development phase and is not available to regular users, and it is not clear when it will begin to roll out.
