Harry Potter magic on e-ink: a tablet that writes back to you gives goosebumps

  • A developer transformed the reMarkable Paper Pro e-ink tablet into a functional Tom Riddle's diary from Harry Potter
  • What you write on the page disappears — and an AI-generated response written in Riddle's "hand" immediately appears
  • This is a private project; reMarkable, the manufacturer, has nothing to do with it

Sometimes, combining a smart gadget with a beloved book creates something that goes viral. Developer Maxime Rivest took the reMarkable Paper Pro e-ink tablet and transformed it into Tom Riddle’s diary — the very one Harry wrote in during the Chamber of Secrets, and it wrote back to him. The written words disappear from the page, and moments later, a response appears in a handwriting resembling Riddle’s script. The difference from the book? Artificial intelligence responds.

Disappearing ink just like in the Chamber of Secrets

The entire magic relies on one effect. As soon as you write a message with the pen, the text vanishes from the page — exactly as it worked when Harry first tried writing in the diary. For a moment, nothing happens, and then a reply appears. No keyboard, no chat bubbles, no glowing screen. Just a page, a pen, and handwriting that comes back to you. And because AI responds, it’s not just a single pre-programmed phrase, but a real back-and-forth conversation.

The magic is done by SDK, not magic

Behind the effect is pure craftsmanship. Rivest utilized the SDK (Software Development Kit) for the reMarkable Paper Pro tablet, which allows custom applications to run directly on the device. The process is actually simple: the application captures what you’ve written, erases it from the display, and then renders the AI-generated response in a handwritten font. The e-ink panel with the pen adds the perfect paper-like illusion. Let’s remember that the reMarkable Paper Pro is otherwise a note-taking and reading tool with a starting price of around 630 dollars (in the Czech Republic, it can be found from 15,000 CZK).

Would you confide in a diary that talks back to you, or would it give you goosebumps?
