The major redesign of the Google Home app, which we recently reported on, is starting to roll out to iPhone owners. According to 9to5Google, Google released version 4.0.54 for iOS on Saturday, bringing significant changes to both the interface and features. The most important new feature is the integration of Gemini artificial intelligence for smart home control, and an interesting point may be the modernization of the logo (see image above).

Gemini comes to the smart home

The main new feature is the „Ask Home“ function, which integrates Gemini directly into the app. Tapping the new bar at the top of the app opens a chat interface where you can type commands to control devices. The system displays carousel tiles of individual devices, which can be turned on or off with a single tap.

Upon first launch, users must agree to Gemini’s terms of use. So far, only basic device search and displaying automations while typing are functional. More advanced features are not yet active – Google displays a message stating that “Ask Home is not yet ready for your home, but you’ll get a notification when it is”.

An interesting feature will be Gemini Live, where the microphone remains active even after the first query. This will allow asking follow-up questions without needing to say “Hey Google” again. The microphone automatically turns off after a short period of inactivity, or you can manually end the conversation.

Complete interface redesign

The app received a new icon with gradient colors, reminiscent of the Google G and Gemini design. The interface has been simplified into three main tabs – Home, Activity, and Automations. The Home tab contains top sub-tabs for Favorites, Devices, Cameras, Lights, or Wi-Fi, which can be switched by swiping.

In the upper part of the app, besides the new Ask Home feature bar, we find a circle for setting Home/Away status, a plus button for adding devices, and an account menu with access to settings.

Further improvements and availability

For users with active Voice Match, the option to search and view history from compatible cameras on smart displays will be available. Google also notes that the Gemini voice assistant will be available to all household members, including guests.

Currently, the redesign is rolling out to users in the Public Preview program on iOS. The full launch of all features is expected on October 1st, when Google is set to officially announce the new features. For Android, Google has not yet announced a release date, but the update can be expected in the coming weeks.
