I turned all the icons on my Pixel into disco balls. This is what it looks like

The streaming platform Spotify recently subjected its mobile app icon to an experiment: it transformed the rather simple black and green logo into a more extravagant disco ball. Whether the aim was to expose the established service to short-term media attention or to gauge user reactions, it worked. Although the reactions (or at least those I saw across the internet) were far from mostly positive, comments about the new Spotify icon flooded social media.

Discussions even went so far that users started using artificial intelligence to transform the icons of other applications and services into the same style. And this is where Google comes in, deciding not to stop at online jokes. This week, it delivered a special icon pack to Pixel phone owners, which transforms all your home screen apps into disco balls.

My home screen has never been tidy, and I’ve always tended to experiment. For the past few months, however, I’ve managed to keep all icons in pink, matching the color palette of my entire interface. But as soon as news of the new icon pack’s release appeared, I thought, why not give it a try…

My home screen now definitely looks more colorful and, in a way, unique. The logos of some apps, such as the social network X, resemble jewels, and the Google Keep lightbulb looks as if it’s made of gold. Artificial intelligence converted some icons very accurately, while others are at least strange (for example, the Mobile Bank logo now resembles a Pokéball, and the Xiaomi Earbuds app is completely unidentifiable at first glance).

Honestly, I think I’ll soon go back to the original single-color pink icons…
