If you own a Google Pixel phone, you probably know that turning mobile data on/off via the control center requires more than one click. However, that’s likely coming to an end. Google released Android 17 Beta 3 on Thursday, and the update finally includes the separation of Wi-Fi and mobile data into two separate items. So, they will no longer share a single tile, as they have until now.

Simpler Connection Control

The new system works intuitively – a single tap on the tile turns the respective connection off or on. Wi-Fi activates immediately, while for mobile data, the system requires confirmation. A long press on either tile opens the familiar menu with detailed network settings. Additionally, both tiles can be expanded according to user preference. The news was first reported by 9to5Google. Android 17 Beta 3 is currently available for Google Pixel phones.

When I first got acquainted with the Pixel, I was slightly taken aback by the combined menu for controlling mobile data and Wi-Fi. The whole system felt a bit like the phone expected me to have data constantly on or off and not switch it as needed at all. Now that I have an unlimited plan, it doesn’t bother me as much, but with a 10 GB per month limit, turning data on and off via the shared menu was quite inconvenient.

I believe I’m not the only one glad that Google finally came to its senses and separated the items after years. It’s true that Pixel UI has now lost one of its original elements, but I don’t think I’ll miss it…

Were you looking forward to the separation of Wi-Fi and mobile data?
