Running a cable to the gate or the corner of the garage can take some time, and that’s assuming there’s even an outlet there. A battery-powered camera solves this problem by not needing any cables. You can now get the TP-Link Tapo C400 with code ALZADNY20 for 1,239 CZK instead of 1,549 CZK. It promises up to six months of battery life and also features AI-powered person detection without the need for a subscription.

Quick summary:
✅ Makes sense if you want to monitor your garden, driveway, or garage and don’t have a way (or desire) to run a cable to the camera.
⚠️ Consider that the camera connects only to 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, and the signal must reach the mounting location.
💡 For 1,239 CZK, you get an outdoor camera with person detection, for which you don’t pay any subscription, and recording to your own memory card.

360 CZK cheaper than when it arrived in the Czech Republic

When the Tapo C400 entered the Czech market last September, as we wrote then, it cost 1,599 CZK. Alza last sold it for 1,549 CZK, so with code ALZADNY20, you save 310 CZK, or 20%. Compared to the launch price, it’s 360 CZK less.

The timing is also right. It’s already getting dark around six, and after the switch to winter time, it will be an hour earlier, so the camera above the gate will spend most of its “working hours” in the dark. This is where color night vision, which according to Alza illuminates up to 10 meters, comes in handy.

The battery is supposed to last six months. Under what conditions?

Inside the camera is a built-in 5,200 mAh battery, with which the manufacturer promises up to 180 days of operation on a single charge. However, this figure comes from TP-Link’s laboratory test, which accounts for 250 seconds of recording and live view per day, roughly four minutes. A camera pointed at a busy entrance where something is always happening will return to the charger sooner.

It records video in Full HD (1,920 × 1,080 px) resolution. TP-Link promises that you’ll be able to distinguish faces and license plates. However, with Full HD, a lot depends on how far from the camera a person or car stops, so don’t expect miracles at the end of a long driveway.

More than resolution, AI-powered person detection, which works without a subscription, will save your nerves. The camera should therefore not trigger for every cat or branch in the wind. You can further narrow down alerts with activity zones, so you can exclude the sidewalk behind the fence from monitoring, and privacy zones can cover, for example, a neighbor’s window, which then won’t appear in either the recording or the live view.

Where to hang it and where are the recordings stored?

The manufacturer relies on magnetic mounting, and the package also includes a bracket with mounting hardware. IP65 protection shields the camera from rain and dust, so it can hang outdoors all year round. The lens is fixed, and the camera does not rotate on its own, so you set the direction of the shot manually during installation.

It connects directly to the network, without a hub, but only via 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi. Before screwing it onto a fence or tree, take your phone and check if your home Wi-Fi still reaches that spot well. This will save you unnecessary repositioning of the bracket.

Recordings are stored on a microSD card up to 512 GB, which you must purchase separately. According to TP-Link’s estimate, a 128GB card can hold approximately 208 hours of footage with 40 events per day. Those who want recordings in the cloud can pay extra for the Tapo Care service with 30-day history; the first month is free, according to Alza. The camera also supports two-way audio, a siren with a light alarm, and its own recorded voice message for uninvited guests, and is compatible with Alexa, Google Assistant, and SmartThings.

Who the Tapo C400 won’t be enough for

Those who need a sharper image over a greater distance should look for 4K cameras, such as the Tapo C460, but they will have to pay extra for them.

A battery-powered camera is also not an ideal choice for continuous 24/7 recording; with that, the battery life would quickly diminish. And if your Wi-Fi doesn’t reach the garden, you’ll have to factor in an extender or mesh system, which will reduce the overall savings.

Cottage, garage, gate: where the discount makes the most sense

The Tapo C400 will be especially appreciated by owners of houses with gardens, cottages, or remote garages where an outlet is missing, and running electricity for a camera would cost more than the camera itself. For 1,239 CZK with code ALZADNY20, I would consider it a cheap way to monitor a place where a cable cannot reach. Those who want 4K image or nonstop recording, on the other hand, should rather opt for a more expensive, mains-powered model.

Do you monitor your house and garden with a camera, or do you currently rely on observant neighbors?
