A few days ago, Apple introduced the new iPhones 17, but when I was looking at prices on Heureka, I stumbled upon something much more interesting. Last year’s iPhone 16 Pro with 256 GB is offered by one seller there for 22,499 CZK. That’s almost a third less than the official price, for which it is still sold at large retailers like Alza or Datart, where it costs over 28 thousand.

Why last year’s Pro is more interesting than this year’s base model

The new iPhone 17 finally got a 120Hz ProMotion display, which fans have been waiting for years. This is great news, as a 60Hz screen was truly past its prime for base models. However, otherwise, the iPhone 17 remains “just” a base model – it has two cameras, an aluminum body, and a smaller battery than the Pro version.

In contrast, last year’s iPhone 16 Pro offers a trio of cameras including a telephoto lens with 5× optical zoom, a titanium body, which is lighter and more durable than aluminum, and a larger battery. And most importantly – it naturally also has a 120Hz display, as Pro models have had it since the iPhone 13 Pro.

What you get for those 22 thousand

The iPhone 16 Pro isn’t just about the titanium back and the third camera. It has ProRAW and ProRes for video, which you’ll appreciate if you want to work with the content further.

Of course, the new iPhone 17 Pro is even better. It switched back to an aluminum frame (surprisingly for better heat dissipation), has a larger battery, and faster charging. The telephoto lens has a more practical 4× zoom instead of 5× and a larger sensor. The A19 Pro chip is about 20% faster.

But it also costs at least 33 thousand for the 256GB version. That’s almost 10 thousand more than the offer on Heureka. For that money, you could still buy AirPods Pro and have some change left over.

Verdict: Last year’s Pro for the price of this year’s base model

If you don’t need the latest model and are mainly interested in the price/performance ratio, the iPhone 16 Pro for 22,499 CZK is the best offer on the market. You get Pro features, a great camera, and premium craftsmanship for the price Apple charges for the base model.

The new iPhone 17 has its advantages, but if you’re not a professional or a tech enthusiast who must have the latest, the saved 6-13 thousand (depending on whether you would buy the base or Pro model) is a significant amount of money. With that, you can get Apple Watch, AirPods, or simply keep it in your wallet for a rainy day.

Just hurry – they won’t stay in stock long at such a price.

Would last year’s iPhone 16 Pro be enough for you?
