Google continues to aggressively improve its search engine using artificial intelligence and today introduced another batch of new features for AI Mode. In recent months, it has become a key tool for the company in competing with rival AI assistants. The new features primarily target students and people working with documents – they will now allow uploading PDF files, working with images on desktop, and offer better information organization thanks to the Canvas feature.

Uploading PDF Documents and Image Analysis on Desktop

The ability to ask complex questions about images was previously only available in the Google mobile app; now, the feature is expanding to desktop browsers. In the coming weeks, the option to directly upload PDF documents to AI Mode and ask questions about their content will be added.

The system can analyze file content and link it with relevant information from the web to provide a useful answer along with links to sources where more details can be obtained. Google also promises to extend support to other file types in the coming months, although it has not yet specified which ones.

Canvas: A Dynamic Assistant for Complex Projects

A completely new feature is Canvas, which helps with creating plans and organizing information across multiple sessions. It is a dynamic sidebar that updates on the fly and allows for gradual refinement of the result using follow-up questions.

Canvas essentially assembles your project like a puzzle, allowing you to gradually refine it until you are satisfied with the result. In the near future, the option to upload files for additional context will also be added. This feature is expected to launch “in the coming weeks”, but initially only for users in the USA who are part of the AI Mode Labs experiment.

Search Live: Conversations with AI via Camera

Google is also improving the Search Live feature, which will now allow video input and full integration with Google Lens. Simply open the Lens app within the Google app, tap the Live icon, and ask any question while pointing your camera at an object of interest.

In this way, you can have a fluid conversation with the search engine in AI mode, with the live camera feed from your device serving as context. This feature is rolling out this week, also on mobile devices in the USA for users enrolled in the AI Mode Labs experiment. Google remains silent on a global rollout for now, but gradual expansion can be expected after successful testing.

Improvements for Chrome Browser

In Chrome, thanks to the combination of Lens and AI Mode, you can ask and learn about what you see on your computer screen – whether it’s a web page, PDF, or anything else you’re viewing. And soon, when you click on Chrome’s address bar, you’ll see a new “Ask Google about this page” option in the dropdown menu.

After asking a question, you’ll get an AI overview with key information in the sidebar. Google announced that this week it will be possible to ask follow-up questions via AI Mode – either by selecting AI Mode in Lens search results or by clicking “Explore deeper” at the bottom of the AI overview.

Who are the New Features For?

Google clearly targets students and users who work with more complex information. The ability to upload PDF documents and ask questions about them will significantly facilitate navigation in academic texts, research papers, or textbooks. The Canvas feature, in turn, will help with organizing notes and creating structured plans.

Most of these features are currently in the testing phase and limited to the USA. Google traditionally rolls out new features gradually, so it can be expected that they will expand to other regions, including Europe, in the coming months.

The question remains when these features will also reach the Czech Republic. AI Mode has been usable via VPN for a long time (even in Czech), but Google has not officially served us this novelty yet.

Will you appreciate these new features in Google Search?
