A mechanical keyboard with hotswap switches for under a thousand? The MSI FORGE GK310 looks like a great deal on paper. Metal construction, a volume control wheel, five spare switches included. However, it has one major catch that deterred some customers so much that they returned the keyboard.

RGB that doesn’t listen

The biggest problem with the GK310 is its backlighting. The keyboard has no configuration software, and RGB effects cannot be adjusted. If you want single-color static backlighting – such as just red or white – you’re out of luck. Only twenty preset effects are available, most of which resemble a disco more than a work tool.

One customer aptly summarizes it: “Excellent keyboard ruined by non-configurable RGB. If I were 15, I could still imagine keeping it on my desk.” Another user returned the keyboard immediately because of it. If rainbow colors don’t bother you, or you simply turn them off, you can read on.

Solid Foundation for a Good Price

Aside from the RGB, the rest of the keyboard is above average for its price. The metal top cover adds stability and weight – it won’t budge even during intense gaming. The mechanical switches have a pleasant feel and are not excessively loud. “I had a membrane MSI before, and I don’t find this one to be louder,” writes a satisfied customer.

The hotswap design theoretically allows switches to be changed without soldering. In practice, however, some customers report problems: “It’s supposed to be hotswap, but the switches can’t be removed.” Another reviewer even states that the spare switches from the package don’t fit. Most users, however, rate this feature positively, so these are likely isolated cases.

Practical Details

The volume control wheel is a nice bonus, often missing on cheaper keyboards. The removable plastic frame around the keys allows you to change the look according to your mood. The package also includes a keycap puller tool and five spare switches.

Czech and Slovak localization is present, but diacritics are not backlit – however, this is a common problem for most CZ/SK keyboards in this price category. The cable measures 1.8 meters, which should be sufficient even for larger desks.

One More Serious Problem

One customer reports that after some time, several keys started double-clicking – meaning they registered one press as two. While the complaint rate of 1.15% is low, this type of defect can significantly hinder usability. At a price under a thousand, it’s a risk you need to consider.

The original price was 1,199 CZK, and now with code ALZADNY20, it costs 959 CZK. A rating of 4.6 out of 5 from 33 customers sounds good, and 85% of people recommend the keyboard. If you don’t mind rainbow RGB and are looking for an inexpensive mechanical keyboard with a metal body and hotswap switches, the GK310 offers a decent price/performance ratio. However, if you want to control the backlighting, look elsewhere.

Do you use a mechanical keyboard, or is a classic membrane one enough for you?
