According to UDN, some manufacturers will pay 7 to 10 percent more for licenses. This might not sound dramatic, but previously, the numbers were usually much lower. However, since this July, according to an unnamed manager from one of the manufacturers, the average increase has reached the aforementioned 7 to 10 percent, which is reportedly a significant jump compared to previous years.

The exact amount Microsoft charges varies from case to case. Each brand has its own rate, so the impact will not be the same everywhere. Furthermore, the manufacturer usually does not bear the entire cost of the license – at least part of it is reflected in the price of the finished computer. And according to the report, this is exactly what is starting to happen: the price increase is reportedly affecting laptop prices.

Why Does This News Come at the Worst Possible Time?

The standalone retail license for Windows 11 for end-users is not expected to change; the higher rates are only aimed at manufacturers who supply the system pre-installed. However, this will not help the average buyer much – the vast majority of people purchase laptops with Windows pre-installed.

The price increase affects a market that is already struggling with memory shortages. Due to this, the prices of laptops and desktop computers have risen significantly over the past year, and analysts warn that the worst may not be over.
