Samsung kept its promise and officially began distributing the stable version of the One UI 8.0 update on September 15, based on Android 16. The first in line are the flagship models of the Galaxy S25 series, but surprisingly, the Galaxy S25 Edge model also appeared among them, despite not being part of the beta program. The update brings many new features, interface improvements, and better security. Let’s see what exactly it offers and when it will reach other devices.

Who will get the update first?

In the first wave, the update is heading to Galaxy S25, Galaxy S25+, and Galaxy S25 Ultra, which was expected as these models were part of the beta program. However, it’s a surprise that the Galaxy S25 Edge is receiving the stable version simultaneously, even though it did not participate in the beta program at all. The update is currently rolling out in South Korea but should soon arrive in other regions, including Europe.

The firmware is labeled BYI3, and the update size varies depending on whether you were already part of the beta program. Beta users download a package of around 550 MB, while those upgrading directly from the stable One UI 7 version must download almost 4 GB of data.

When will other devices receive it?

Based on the distribution pace and previous Samsung statements, it can be expected that the update might extend to last year’s premium models – the Galaxy S24 series, Galaxy Z Fold 6, and Galaxy Z Flip 6 – still during September. Most other supported devices, including tablets, should then receive the update by the end of 2025.

Samsung has promised that all supported devices will receive the stable version of One UI 8.0 before the end of the year, which currently seems realistic.

What’s new in One UI 8.0?

Samsung has published a complete changelog, revealing a host of improvements across the entire system. Here are the most interesting new features:

Productivity and multitasking

File sharing via Quick Share has been significantly improved and is now accessible directly from quick settings. You can receive files while the Quick Share screen is open, and also send files directly from this application.

In the My Files app, you can now filter downloaded files by the application that downloaded them, making it easier to find them even without knowing the exact file name.

Improved display support in Samsung DeX offers more options when connecting to an external monitor or TV. You can choose an optimized resolution up to WQHD and rotate the display by 90, 180, or 270 degrees.

Split screen has a new feature where you can minimize one app and pin it to the edge of the screen, while dedicating most of the space to the other. Tapping the smaller app quickly switches between them.

Improved applications

The Reminders app has been completely redesigned. Categories are now displayed at the top of the screen, making it easier to quickly see the number of reminders in each category. Custom categories can be hidden with a single tap to free up more screen space.

The Calendar now allows direct management of reminders without needing to open a separate app. When adding an event, name and time suggestions are displayed based on your previous events.

The Samsung Internet browser has received a new optimized menu with customization options based on your preferences.

The Weather app offers richer and more realistic visualizations that intuitively represent current weather conditions.

Security and privacy

The Secure Folder has received significant improvements. You can now set apps within the folder to be hidden and prevent notifications from showing when the folder is locked. For maximum protection, the folder can be completely hidden and encrypted.

Camera and health

In the Camera app, you can now access quick controls by simply swiping up or down anywhere in the preview area.

Samsung Health adds running distance challenges, where you can challenge your friends to see who can run a certain distance faster. You can also now set reminders for logging food intake.

How to install the update

If you own one of the Galaxy S25 models and want to check if the update is already available for you, go to Settings > Software update and tap Download and install. If the update is not yet available, we recommend checking regularly in the coming days.

Before installing the update, make sure your battery is sufficiently charged (at least 50%) or connect your phone to a charger. It’s also advisable to back up important data, although data loss should not occur during a standard update.

Are you looking forward to One UI 8.0? Which feature caught your attention the most?
