The team behind the popular AI search engine Perplexity officially launched the Comet web browser, which uses artificial intelligence to get to know you better and save you time while surfing the internet. However, access is still very limited. Although availability has expanded from macOS to the Windows operating system, immediate access (i.e., without an invitation based on an earlier waitlist signup) is requires a Max subscription. And that costs 200 dollars per month.

An Assistant That Works For You

Undoubtedly, the biggest draw of the Comet browser is its integrated assistant, which handles tasks that would otherwise require your full attention. It can independently click, type, and fill out forms, allowing you to focus on more important things. The assistant can browse websites, search for information, and even perform complex actions such as comparing products, reading reviews, and completing the purchase process all the way to checkout.

The browser also offers smart actions with Perplexity, including the “Assistant” or “Summarize” functions. These tools provide you with quick answers, content summaries, translations, and other useful information directly on the page you are currently viewing, without the need to switch between tabs or applications.

Email and Calendar Management on a New Level

After connecting with Gmail and Google Calendar, Comet’s capabilities extend even further. The assistant can inform you about your daily schedule, search for answers in your email inbox, or send and schedule meetings on your behalf. It can also show you who your next meeting is with, check your schedule, or even reschedule your next meeting to a different time, all without needing to leave your current workspace.

Other practical features include the ability to search your browsing history, watched videos, and documents. If you’ve ever encountered the problem of not being able to remember exactly where you saw a certain piece of information, Comet will help you with that easily and effectively.

Innovative Features for Maximum Focus

The Comet browser also boasts several unique tools that help you stay organized and focused while working. It can close files and tabs that you haven’t touched for several days, group your research tabs into collections, or highlight interesting news from your feeds. Naturally, it also includes creating a daily to-do list.

Particularly useful is the @tab feature, which allows the Comet assistant to work with specific open tabs. This ensures that responses are always relevant to what you are currently working on, without the need to switch between different windows or tabs. This function is invaluable, especially for complex projects where you need to work with information from multiple sources simultaneously.

A Killer of Traditional Browsers?

Certainly not yet. While Perplexity Comet boasts a wide array of AI-powered features that can potentially free you from numerous routine tasks and thus increase your productivity, if you are not deeply convinced that the time saved is equivalent to four thousand Czech crowns, then you can probably take a break for a while and stop following developments around the browser. Unless you are among the AI enthusiasts, which I consider myself to be.

However, once Perplexity Comet grows out of its infancy and becomes more accessible – one way could also be locking only some features behind a paywall, not the entire browser – it will become an interesting competitor for Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, or other traditional solutions, which do not offer AI access to such an extent.

Do you think Perplexity Comet will be able to make your work easier?
