While newer models like Fenix 8 or Forerunner 970 received their stable updates last week, owners of older premium Garmin watches had to wait. Now they have finally received it – beta version 23.16 is available for Fenix 7, Epix, Enduro 2, Marq Gen 2, and Quatix 7 models. After more than three weeks since the previous beta version, this is an important step forward.

The last stable update for these watches occurred in June with version 22.06. Since then, Garmin has only released beta versions, which can be frustrating for regular users. The beta program is not for everyone – it requires registration and a willingness to tolerate occasional bugs. Additionally, Fenix 7 users lose the ECG function in beta versions, which will only return with the final stable version.

What the new version fixes and what it means

Beta 23.16 primarily focuses on fixing two specific issues: CT10 sensor pairing failures (golf sensors) and navigation problems during hunting activities. These might seem like minor details, but for affected users, these are crucial fixes that will allow them to fully utilize their expensive watches.

More interesting than the fixes themselves, however, is the jump in versioning from 23.08 directly to 23.16. This unusually large difference suggests that Garmin might be preparing a final stable version. When a manufacturer skips numbers like this, it often indicates internal testing of a larger number of changes that are about to be released as an official update.

How to get the update and what to watch out for

The update is available “over the air” (OTA) for all registered beta testers. Those in the program can request the update immediately via the watch menu: Menu → System → Software Update → Check for Updates. Alternatively, Garmin Express can be used on a computer.

It is important to know that Tactix 7 and MARQ Aviator Gen2 models do not receive beta updates at all. If you own a Fenix 7 and use the ECG function, consider whether to participate in the beta program – this function is temporarily disabled in beta versions and will only return with the final version.

Garmin doesn’t forget older models

At a time when attention is mainly focused on the latest smartwatches, it’s positive to see that Garmin still supports its older flagship models. Fenix 7 and Epix are still among the top on the market, and their owners deserve regular updates.

Current developments suggest that stable version 23.xx could arrive within the next few weeks. For owners of these watches, this will finally mean new features and improvements after more than half a year of waiting. Until then, we can only hope that Garmin doesn’t slow down and soon converts all beta novelties into a stable version that even more conservative users will be able to install.
