Last week we informed you that the Samsung Galaxy S26 series gained support for sharing files with iPhones via AirDrop. It uses a new Quick Share feature that Google first introduced last autumn for the Pixel 10 series and is gradually expanding to other devices. Now it appears that Quick Share could receive another improvement inspired by its Apple competitor – this time it will be about sharing files by simply tapping two devices together.

Tap to Share: just tap phones together

The Android Authority server discovered a feature labeled “Tap to Share” in a leaked build of One UI 9, with the description: “Just tap the top of your phone to another device, and files will be sent.” Similar references to the system service “TapToShare” are also found in beta versions of Android 17 and Google Play Services.

Everything indicates that Samsung and Google are collaborating on the feature – similar to the integration of Quick Share with AirDrop. NFC should serve as the transfer trigger, while Quick Share will handle the actual data transfer via Wi-Fi Direct. This should make the transfer significantly faster than older solutions based purely on Bluetooth.

When can we expect it?

The official announcement could come with the stable version of Android 17. The first devices to support it will likely be Samsung and Google Pixel phones, with other manufacturers expected to follow later.

Would you appreciate the ability to share files by simply tapping phones together?
