Samsung Galaxy S27 Ultra reportedly set for a super camera upgrade. It's said to get a larger sensor with LOFIC technology

The official sales of the Galaxy S26 series haven’t even started yet, and speculations about the next generation are already emerging. This time, however, it shouldn’t be just cosmetic changes – leaker Digital Chat Station claims that Samsung is finally preparing a significant camera upgrade that fans have been waiting for for years.

Finally a larger sensor?

According to information published on the Chinese social network Weibo, Samsung is working on a sensor codenamed ISOCELL HPA. It should offer a resolution of 200 Mpx with a size of 1/1.12 inches, which is a significant leap compared to the current 1/1.3-inch HP2 sensor that Samsung has been using since the Galaxy S23 Ultra. The new sensor is also expected to support LOFIC (Lateral Overflow Integration Capacitor) technology, which improves dynamic range directly at the hardware level.

Another well-known leaker, Ice Universe, joined the discussion, slightly complicating the situation. According to him, the Galaxy S27 Ultra is expected to use a modified variant of the sensor codenamed HP6, which will retain the smaller size of 1/1.3 inches, but thanks to optimizations, it should offer comparable performance.

Samsung under competitive pressure

Speculations about a camera upgrade come at a time when Samsung is noticeably lagging in this area. The flagship Galaxy S series has been using practically identical sensors for four years now, while the competition is not idle – the recently introduced Xiaomi 17 Ultra already uses LOFIC technology, and Apple is reportedly planning a similar move for this year’s iPhones.

It is nevertheless important to emphasize that these are very early speculations. Samsung still has about a year until the introduction of the Galaxy S27, and the situation could change significantly – after all, a considerable portion of last year’s leaks about the S26 series ultimately did not materialize.
