South Korean giant Samsung has seemingly revealed the name of its long-awaited triple-folding phone. The company filed a trademark application for “Galaxy Z TriFold” in South Korea, clearly indicating the branding direction for the new groundbreaking device. While the name “Galaxy G Fold” was previously speculated, it seems Samsung wants to maintain consistency with its successful Z series.

History of Promises and Delayed Launch

The entire saga of the triple-folding phone has been going on for quite some time. Samsung first showed hints of a triple-folding display at CES back in 2022, where it showcased prototypes named Flex G and Flex S (based on the shape in which the displays fold). At the January Galaxy Unpacked 2025, where Samsung introduced the Galaxy S25 series, the company confirmed that it is working on such a device.

Many fans expected Samsung to unveil this revolutionary device at the July Galaxy Unpacked alongside the Galaxy Z Fold7 and Z Flip7 models. However, this did not happen. Instead, Samsung Electronics head TM Roh confirmed that the new model would be launched by the end of 2025, stating: “We are now focusing on perfecting the product and its usability, but we have not yet decided on its name. Once the product approaches completion, we plan to make a final decision.”

Z TriFold Instead of G Fold

According to GalaxyClub, which discovered the trademark registration, the device has the internal code designation SM-F968N. For comparison, the current Galaxy Z Fold 7 has the designation SM-F966. The use of the letter “F” in the model number confirms its belonging to the family of foldable devices.

While earlier leaks suggested that the phone might be named “Galaxy G Fold” (after its G-shaped folding design), the decision to stick with the letter “Z” in the name makes sense from a marketing perspective. Samsung has invested enormous resources into building brand awareness for the Z series as a synonym for foldable devices, and abandoning this designation could lead to customer confusion.

However, as sources close to the company point out, Samsung often registers multiple potential names for its products and ultimately uses only one of them. It is therefore possible that “Galaxy Z TriFold” is just one of several names being considered. The possibility of “Galaxy Z Fold Ultra” has also emerged in the rumor mill, which, from my perspective, might better fit into the existing product hierarchy.

What do we know about the triple-folding phone’s design?

Thanks to animations discovered in the One UI 8.0 code based on Android 16, we have an idea of how the device will look and function. The triple-folding phone will have two folds, allowing the display to be folded into a compact shape, while also offering a significantly larger display area when unfolded than the current Galaxy Z Fold7.

The device is expected to resemble a small tablet when unfolded, opening up entirely new possibilities for productivity and multitasking. However, the technical challenges associated with creating two reliable folds are significant, which is likely why the development of this device is taking longer than Samsung originally planned.

Limited Availability and High Price

According to available information, Samsung will produce the triple-folding phone in limited quantities and only for selected markets. Similar to the first Galaxy Fold, which served more as a showcase of technological capabilities than a mass-market product, the Galaxy Z TriFold will likely be a highly exclusive affair.

Related to this is the expected high price. While the current Galaxy Z Fold7 starts at 52,990 CZK, the triple-folding variant could be significantly more expensive. It is estimated that the price could exceed 70,000 CZK.

When can we expect the official unveiling?

Given the confirmation from Samsung’s management, we can expect the official unveiling by the end of 2025. It is speculated that this could happen at a separate event dedicated to this revolutionary product, rather than as part of a standard Galaxy Unpacked.

The registration of the “Galaxy Z TriFold” trademark is further proof that the product is nearing commercial launch. Samsung typically does not file trademark applications for product names it does not intend to use in the foreseeable future.
