While One UI 8 is gradually rolling out to more and more Samsung devices, further information about the upcoming One UI 8.5 version is leaking. Among other things, the South Korean manufacturer is preparing a new feature that uses artificial intelligence to create notification summaries, which should significantly facilitate orientation in the flood of alerts.

AI notification summaries will simplify message overview

Thanks to a leaked test version of the One UI 8.5 firmware for the Galaxy S25 Ultra, a new feature has been revealed that will use artificial intelligence to create concise summaries of long notifications. Although, according to SamMobile, this feature is already present in the leaked version, it is not yet fully functional – it is visible but doesn’t actually work, as it is still a development version.

According to available information, when users first pull down the notification panel in One UI 8.5, a pop-up window explaining this feature will appear. It will offer the option to activate summaries in the settings or continue without this feature. Samsung aims to help users navigate the large number of notifications, which often contain too much text.

Option to select apps for summaries

In the settings for this feature, it will be possible to select applications to be excluded from summary creation. While this setting already exists in the current development version, it is not yet fully implemented – all installed applications are listed as default and cannot yet be removed. This will, of course, change in the final version of the overlay.

This feature comes at a time when users are facing absolute floods of notifications, often causing them to overlook important alerts. AI summaries should alleviate this problem by condensing long messages into more concise and clearer notifications.

Local processing using a Google model

The leaked information also indicates that, similar to most other AI features in One UI, notification summaries will utilize a Google AI model – likely Gemini Nano, which is optimized to run directly on the device without the need for a remote server connection.

This is important from a privacy perspective, as notifications often contain sensitive personal information. Local processing ensures that this data remains secure directly on the device and will not be shared with external servers.

When can we expect One UI 8.5?

According to available information, the One UI 8.5 update should be introduced alongside the flagship Galaxy S26 series, which is expected to launch in January next year.

In addition to AI notification summaries, the One UI 8.5 update should also bring other new features, such as the ability to tap the back of the phone to launch a selected action or application. This feature was previously only available through the Good Lock app, but in One UI 8.5, it will be integrated directly into the system. We previously informed you about smarter switching between Wi-Fi and mobile data or changes to the lock screen.

Do you think AI notification summaries will be useful, or is it more of a marketing feature?
