Some Pixels are experiencing contactless payment failures. According to users, a restart helps

Some Google Pixel phone owners report that their contactless NFC payments only work intermittently. On September 28, the Android Authority server highlighted the problem, stating that complaints concern several generations of phones. In addition to payments, contactless passes are also acting up, and users suggest restarting the device as a solution.

Affected users describe repeated outages, not permanently non-functional NFC. Some started noticing the issues in the week before the report was published, and they have been recurring since then.

Complaints include Pixel 8 to Pixel 11

Reports come from owners of the Pixel 8, Pixel 9, Pixel 10, and Pixel 11 series. The number of affected users or a complete list of affected models is not yet known. Therefore, it cannot be concluded from the complaints that payments are failing for all users of these phones.

One Pixel 11 Pro XL owner stated that they are using Android 17, another user claims to have the latest updates installed. However, the cause of the issues remains unclear, and a connection to a specific update has not been confirmed. Attributing the error to Android 17 itself would therefore be premature.

Payment fails? Try restarting your phone

If your Pixel behaves similarly, try restarting your phone and then repeating the payment. According to the cited reports, a restart helps, but it is not clear if it works for everyone or for how long. Therefore, I would consider it an attempt to restore functionality, not a definitive fix.

Because of these reports, I would not start by factory resetting the phone or removing payment cards. For Czech Pixel owners, I would base the recommendation on the behavior of their own phone: if it pays without problems, I would not make preventive interventions just because of these complaints. However, in case of repeated failures, I would also pack a physical payment card and not rely exclusively on the mobile phone.
