The portable speaker segment faces relatively tough competition, but American Sonos has an ace up its sleeve – an integrated ecosystem that functions as a whole. It is this philosophy that the new Sonos Play, which the company introduced as its most versatile portable speaker to date, is banking on. Unlike many competitors that function only as standalone devices, Play seamlessly integrates into the Sonos home system and also serves well on trips or in the garden.

Stereo Sound Thanks to Dual Tweeters

The sound performance of Sonos Play is handled by a trio of Class H digital amplifiers, tuned for the speaker’s specific acoustic architecture. The setup consists of two angled tweeters for crisp highs and a distinct stereo image, complemented by a mid-woofer for faithful vocals and deep bass. The speaker also features automatic Trueplay tuning, which continuously optimizes sound based on the environment and played content.

Dimensions are 192.3 × 112.5 × 76.7 mm, so Play fits comfortably in a bag or backpack. The design includes a detachable strap for easy carrying.

All-Day Battery Life and Wireless Charging

Sonos promises up to 24 hours of battery life on a single charge for the new speaker, which should cover longer trips without access to electricity. Actual battery life will, of course, vary depending on volume, connection, and other factors. The package includes a wireless charging base that keeps the speaker ready for use – just place it down and it charges. However, the base requires a USB-C/PD adapter with 18 W or higher output, which is sold separately.

A pleasant bonus is the replaceable battery. When it wears out after years of intensive use, you don’t have to buy a new speaker – just replace the battery. Sonos is thus responding to criticism of consumer electronics with short lifespans.

Durability for Outdoor Enthusiasts

Sonos Play carries IP67 certification, meaning full protection against dust and the ability to be submerged in water up to a depth of 1 meter for 30 minutes. The speaker is also shock-resistant, so it should survive common drops and impacts during outdoor activities. Whether you’re planning a poolside barbecue or a hike in the mountains, Play should hold up.

Wi-Fi at Home, Bluetooth on the Go

The speaker supports connection via both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. At home, it connects to the Sonos system via Wi-Fi, so you can group it with other Sonos speakers or use it as a stereo pair. On the go, you switch to Bluetooth and listen to music from your phone.

A new feature is the ability to synchronize multiple speakers directly via Bluetooth – just hold the Play/Pause button, and up to four Sonos Play or Move 2 speakers will connect to your phone simultaneously. This is useful for camping or picnics where Wi-Fi is not available. Sonos Play also supports Apple AirPlay 2, Spotify Connect, and voice control.

Also Charges Your Phone

An interesting feature is the ability to use Sonos Play as a power bank. Connect a USB-C cable, and the speaker will charge your phone. This is especially useful on trips when an outlet is not available. The speaker also offers a line-in input for connecting a turntable or other audio source, but the necessary adapter is sold separately.

Emphasis on Sustainability

Sonos calls Play its most sustainable portable speaker to date. The construction uses recycled plastics and a halogen-free printed circuit board. The packaging is made from paper certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). The aforementioned replaceable battery then contributes to a longer product lifespan.

Price and Availability

Sonos Play is available in the Czech Republic for 8,399 CZK in black or white. Pre-orders start on March 10, 2026, with deliveries expected to begin on March 31, 2026.
