Starlink increased prices and wants antenna rental. Buying a kit on Alza is now more worthwhile

Satellite internet from SpaceX has transformed in the Czech Republic over the past year from an expensive exotic item into a real alternative – and now you can buy the Starlink Standard Kit hardware set on Alza, where it costs 8,800 Kč. More interesting than the availability itself, however, is the timing: Starlink increased prices in June and now requires new customers to pay a monthly rental fee for the antenna and router, so the question “buy or rent” suddenly takes on a completely different meaning.

Why buying the kit suddenly pays off

As recently as March this year, Starlink significantly reduced prices in the Czech Republic and offered hardware for free with a one-year commitment. However, in June, there was a turnaround: tariffs increased by approximately seven percent, and new customers must pay a device rental fee of 210 Kč per month. This means an additional 2,520 Kč annually, or over five thousand over two years – and that’s just for equipment you will never own.

This is precisely why buying the kit outright starts to make sense. The return on investment for purchasing the standard kit is approximately three and a half years compared to monthly rental – for the smaller Starlink Mini kit, it’s around two years. Therefore, if you plan to use satellite internet long-term, a one-time purchase will be cheaper in total, and the device remains yours.

Current tariff prices for reference: the basic residential plan with 100 Mb/s costs 745 Kč per month, the highest unlimited plan 1,545 Kč (in the Czech Republic, it practically reaches around 332 Mb/s). For operation, registration and tariff agreement directly with Starlink are necessary – the kit itself without a tariff is useless.

What’s in the box and how it works

The kit is designed for self-installation: you get an antenna, a Wi-Fi router, a stand, a power supply, and a cable. You place the antenna in a spot with a clear view of the sky, plug it in, and the system automatically points itself to the satellites – according to users, activation takes mere minutes. The router supports Wi-Fi 6 with speeds up to 1,600 Mb/s, has two LAN ports, and is controlled by a mobile application.

The antenna is designed for outdoor use, measures 45 × 10 centimeters, and the entire kit weighs over six kilograms. A key condition for functionality is an unobstructed view of the sky – trees, a neighbor’s roof, or a chimney can significantly degrade the connection. Starlink accounts for this and offers a thirty-day return period, so you can try it out at your leisure.

Who it makes sense for and who it doesn’t

Let’s be specific. Starlink makes sense in a cottage, a remote village, an isolated area, or where the LTE/5G signal fluctuates and fiber optics will never arrive. For these locations, it truly is a game-changer – remote work from the mountains ceases to be a compromise. Conversely, in an apartment with fiber optics for five hundred per month, satellite has no chance to compete, neither in price nor stability.

Also, keep in mind that short-term outages may occur in extreme weather and that Starlink explicitly reserves the right to change prices in its terms and conditions – which it has demonstrated twice this year. However, if you are among those for whom satellite is the only reasonable path to fast internet, purchasing the kit instead of renting is clearly the cheaper option for long-term use.
