Sony Theatre Bar 8 is one of the few soundbars that reviewers put in direct competition with Sonos Arc. With code ALZADNY30, it has now dropped to 13,159 CZK, which is more than a fifth below its original price of 18,799 CZK. At this price point, it starts to make significantly more sense even for people who don’t own a Sony TV.

Quick summary:
It makes sense if you want a soundbar with real Dolby Atmos sound and the option to gradually expand the setup with a subwoofer and rear speakers.
⚠️ Consider that without a subwoofer, bass will never achieve the full cinematic effect – the soundbar itself is “the beginning of the journey,” not the destination.
💡 At 13,159 CZK, this is one of the lowest points the Theatre Bar 8 has reached in the Czech Republic so far.

Eleven Speakers and 360 Spatial Sound Mapping

The Theatre Bar 8 is a 5.0.2 setup with 11 speaker units in one body. Specifically, this means front left, center, and right speakers, two surround speakers on the sides, and two upward-firing height speakers for Dolby Atmos effect with ceiling reflection. In addition, there are two passive subwoofers built directly into the body, which cover the bass until you purchase an external sub.

Sony’s main marketing trick is called 360 Spatial Sound Mapping. In practice, it’s a software algorithm that uses room calibration and sound phase shift to create the illusion of virtual speakers in places where there are physically none. For a standalone soundbar, it’s more about an effective expansion of the soundstage; this technology fully reveals itself only after adding rear satellites – then you essentially turn a 5.0.2 into a virtual 7.1.4 setup.

Synergy with Sony TV, but Usable Otherwise Too

If you own a BRAVIA series TV, you get full ecosystem integration. Acoustic Center Sync works, where the TV’s speakers complement the soundbar’s center channel, and the sound truly comes from where the character is speaking. Pairing happens automatically, A/V synchronization too, and everything is controlled from the BRAVIA Connect app.

If you have a different TV, the soundbar works via HDMI eARC without any loss of sound quality. You’ll miss out on Acoustic Center Sync and a few other features, but the sound itself won’t degrade. For gamers, HDMI 2.1 passthrough with support for 4K120, VRR, and ALLM is important – you can route a PS5 or Xbox Series X through the soundbar without reducing the refresh rate.

Be Aware of Expansion Costs

Here’s an important truth. The standalone Theatre Bar 8 performs very well for series, podcasts, and regular movies – it’s a leap of several classes compared to the sound built into a TV. However, for a full cinematic experience with deep bass, you will eventually reach for an external subwoofer. Users consistently state in reviews that after adding a Sony SA-SW5 or SA-SW3, the sound transforms rapidly.

However, the price of standalone Sony accessories is not negligible – the SA-SW5 subwoofer and SA-RS5S rear satellites each cost around 13 thousand. If you’re planning a complete 7.1.4 setup, look at the total budget upfront so you’re not surprised later. Sony has built a modular philosophy on this, similar to Sonos – the soundbar is the gateway, but you’ll only unlock its full potential with the complete setup.

What’s Worth Mentioning in Practice

Among the minor points that repeatedly appear in user reviews – the BRAVIA Connect app is elegant and mobile sound calibration works well, but it lacks its own equalizer. This can be frustrating for advanced sound tuning. For music, there’s Spotify Connect, AirPlay 2, Chromecast, and Bluetooth 5.2 with LDAC, so the soundbar can easily become a streaming device even without a TV.

A minor design detail – the soundbar has no display, only an LED indicator. This might confuse some, but Sony approaches it the same way Sonos does: everything is controlled via the app.

Is a standalone soundbar enough for your home cinema, or is it worth investing in a full setup with a subwoofer and rear satellites?
