Movie night and 4K gaming don’t have to mean choosing two different screens. The TCL 55C8L features locally controlled Mini LED backlighting on its 55-inch diagonal and handles 4K at 144 Hz in gaming mode. Moreover, it’s this year’s model with new SQD technology, which shows better results than RGB Mini LED. It’s in stock on Alza for 23,992 CZK with code ALZADNY20.

Quick summary:
✅ Makes sense for: Watching HDR movies from various services, as it supports both Dolby Vision IQ and HDR10+.
⚠️ Consider: The stated HDR consumption is 250 kWh/1000h, while in SDR it’s 64 kWh/1000h. When frequently watching HDR content, this is a significant operational difference.
💡 The code saves 5,998 CZK compared to the current public price of 29,990 CZK without the code and membership. This is not a comparison to an older price.

Backlighting works in zones, surface limits reflections

The main visual attraction is 1,008 local dimming zones. Thanks to these, the TV regulates brightness in individual parts of the image, which helps with contrast and detail rendering. For a film with both bright and dark areas in a single shot, such backlighting control has specific applications.

TCL states a peak brightness of up to 3,000 nits. An anti-reflective layer is also useful for daytime viewing: according to the manufacturer, it reduces reflections from sunlight and room lighting. SQD (Super Quantum Dot) technology uses quantum dots with a higher density of nanoparticles and, according to tests, performs better than RGB Mini LED.

Gaming mode does more than just boost refresh rate

In the panel parameters, you’ll find 100/120 Hz, with a maximum of 144 Hz stated for 4K gaming. VRR and AMD FreeSync Premium Pro are also present. The ALLM function automatically switches the TV to low-latency mode, so you don’t have to manually search for the relevant settings before playing.

More practical than another technology name is the Game Bar gaming panel. It offers quick access to settings, a virtual crosshair, zoom, and texture enhancement in shadows. The latter function targets situations where you struggle to distinguish details in dark parts of a game scene.

Czech services and phone sharing

In addition to Netflix, Disney+, or YouTube, Google TV also supports Oneplay, Prima+, and Skylink Live TV. Chromecast and Apple AirPlay 2 are available for sharing content from your mobile phone. When searching for a movie, you can use the Google Assistant button on the remote and enter your request by voice.

The equipment also includes a Bang & Olufsen sound system with a built-in subwoofer and Dolby Atmos support. Those who already have their own soundbar can use HDMI with eARC.

At its current price, it’s one of the best-equipped TVs, and can also serve as a very high-quality computer monitor, provided you sit far enough away from it.

Would you use this TCL more for its movie or gaming features?
