The design of the Xiaomi 17 Pro (Max) is jaw-dropping. The large rear display looks absolutely stunning

Xiaomi has decided that with this year’s flagships, it will take on the freshly introduced Apple iPhone 17 series. It is therefore skipping the “sixteens”, which even top company representatives previously talked about, and will directly release the Xiaomi 17 series. While yesterday the manufacturer confirmed the surprising names of the new models, today in the early morning hours it showcased their design. And I would be surprised if only my jaw dropped from it.

The Grand Return of the Second Display

Do you remember the Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra? In 2021, the Chinese giant amazed us with a smartphone featuring a distinctive strip on the back, where, in addition to the cameras, there was also a small external display. The manufacturer has decided to bring back this four-year-old element with the Xiaomi 17 series, and although it again seems to be primarily a design element rather than a life-simplifying necessity, it will be technologically far more advanced.

From the teaser published on the social network Weibo, it is evident that the external display of the Xiaomi 17 Pro and Xiaomi 17 Pro Max models will be integrated into a strip occupying approximately one-third of the rear panel’s space. It will have relatively thin bezels, and what’s more, it will fully surround the individual cameras. Ultimately, it will not only be significantly larger than on the Mi 11 Ultra but also more aesthetically pleasing.

Xiaomi showcased several themes that can be displayed on the secondary screen. It appears that its customizability will be similar to that of smartwatches, which usually offer dozens of watch faces differing in color palette and design style by default. From the published video, it is not evident that the display would, for example, support applications, so users will likely have to settle for displaying time and notifications, or possibly the ability to control some system settings. However, we will have to wait for further details.

A New Chipset Will Tick Under the Hood

The new Xiaomi 17 series will arrive this month with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor. If nothing changes, it will be the first family of smartphones with this newly introduced chipset. As for other features, we can expect batteries with a capacity of around 7,000 mAh, fast charging support, and the HyperOS 3 operating system.

The Xiaomi 17 series will likely reach our regions only at the beginning of next year, and probably without the Pro models. Thus, we will only be able to admire the external display in pictures from the internet, as store windows will probably only feature the basic Xiaomi 17 and the camera phone Xiaomi 17 Ultra, which will be revealed later.
