A few days ago, Google quietly updated its Gemini app for Android and iOS, which now includes an integrated player for Audio Overviews. This new feature comes relatively soon after the company made generating audio summaries of documents available in Czech at the end of April, first in NotebookLM and then within Gemini.

No more inconvenient browser playback

Before the update, playing AI-generated audio summaries wasn’t exactly convenient. When a user asked Gemini to create an audio summary of a document, the app forced them to open the file in a browser. They could either play it directly there, which was highly impractical, or they had the option to download it and open it in another app (such as Google Files). However, that was unnecessarily time-consuming.

Thanks to the new update, generated audio summaries now play directly within the Gemini app, similar to the web version. The player interface features blue accents and offers all the controls one would expect from a modern audio player.

New Player Features

The integrated player in the Gemini app comes with a complete set of features. At the top, the podcast title is displayed, below which is a timeline showing the current playback position. There are also buttons to skip forward or rewind by 10 seconds, as well as the classic play/pause button in the center.

What I find particularly handy is the option to adjust the playback speed, ranging from 0.5x to 2x. In the bottom right corner, there is also a download button for the recording.

System Media Controls

Audio summary playback is also fully integrated into system media controls. When playback is active, controls marked with the Gemini icon appear in the notification bar, allowing for quick manipulation of playback without needing to open the app. This feature is especially useful if you want to listen to an audio summary while using other applications.

New Feature Availability

According to 9to5Google, the new player is part of version 16.27 of the stable Google app for Android and the latest Gemini app update on iOS. If the integrated player is not yet visible to you, we recommend checking for updates in the respective app store or waiting a few days for the new feature to roll out to all users.

Audio summaries in Czech offer an interesting way to consume document content while walking, driving, or engaging in other activities where you cannot look at a screen. With the new integrated player, the entire process is even more convenient.

Have you ever used the Audio Overviews feature in Gemini?
