Compact Android flagship phones are rare. You can now buy the Xiaomi 17 in the basic 12GB/256GB configuration for under 20 thousand CZKon Alza for 19,542 CZK with discount code ALZADNY15, from smaller retailers via Heureka starting at 18,990 CZK. Upon its launch at the end of February, the phone started at 22,990 CZK, so the savings can reach up to 4,000 CZK.

Quick summary:
Makes sense if you are looking for flagship performance in a compact body under 200 grams and appreciate two-day battery life.
⚠️ Consider if you need an advanced telephoto lens or a 1-inch sensor — these are offered by the more expensive Ultra version.
💡 For a price under 20 thousand, you get a top processor, Leica optics, and a 6,330 mAh battery with 100W charging — a combination that doesn’t exist elsewhere in this size.

Why the Xiaomi 17 is interesting

With the 17 model, Xiaomi targets users who want flagship performance without enormous dimensions. The phone weighs just 191 grams, has a 6.3-inch diagonal, and you’ll forget it’s in your pocket. Inside, you’ll find the same Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 as in the more expensive Ultra version — no compromises in performance. We had the opportunity to compare both models side-by-side, and the seventeen surprised us by how naturally it fits in the hand on the first grip. You can practically cover the entire display with your thumb, and one-handed operation is a given.

Display and camera in practice

The LTPO AMOLED display offers a resolution of 2,656 × 1,220 pixels with a density of 460 ppi — one of the highest values in the entire smartphone class. The refresh rate adaptively adjusts from 1 to 120 Hz, which saves battery during static content and ensures smoothness when scrolling. A peak brightness of 3,500 nits guarantees readability even in direct sunlight, which users repeatedly confirm in reviews.

The camera is built around a trio of 50Mpx Leica lenses. The main Light Fusion 950 sensor, measuring 1/1.31 inches with an aperture of f/1.67 and optical stabilization, excels day and night. The 60mm telephoto lens with 2.6x optical zoom proves useful for portraits thanks to its pleasing perspective and macro capability from 10 cm. The ultrawide-angle lens with a 102° field of view is decent in good light, but according to our experience, it struggles at night — this is the trade-off for a more compact body compared to the Ultra version.

Battery and charging: smaller phone, longer endurance

Perhaps the biggest surprise of the entire phone. The compact Xiaomi 17 has a 6,330 mAh battery — larger than the more expensive Ultra with 6,000 mAh. Combined with a smaller display, this practically means the seventeen lasts longer, approximately an hour more of screen-on time. Users on Alza repeatedly mention two-day battery life with normal use.

Charging is equally interesting. The Xiaomi 17 supports 100W wired charging with PPS PD compatibility — you don’t need a proprietary charger. 50W wireless charging will be appreciated by those who prefer a life without cables, and 22.5W reverse charging can help charge headphones or watches in an emergency. However, note that the adapter is not included in the package — this is a consequence of EU regulations.

Practical aspects: ports, durability, software

The phone offers dual SIM (nano + nano or nano + eSIM), NFC for contactless payments, USB-C 3.2 Gen 1, and an infrared port for controlling home appliances. IP68 certification ensures resistance to dust and submersion up to 4 meters for 30 minutes. The ultrasonic in-display fingerprint reader works lightning-fast and reliably, according to reviews.

The software runs on Android 16 with the HyperOS 3 overlay. Xiaomi promises five major system updates and 6 years of security patches. The system is fast and optimized, although users switching from Samsung mention needing a few days to get used to the different menu layout.

What users say

On Alza, the Xiaomi 17 has a rating of 5.0 out of 5 from 241 customers, with 99% of them recommending the phone. They most frequently praise its compact size, battery life, system speed, and camera quality. One user even mentioned that the phone survived a 3.5-meter fall onto pavement without a single scratch, thanks to the included case.

Critical voices primarily concern details. The included plastic case is slippery in hand, and many users recommend quickly acquiring a higher-quality alternative. Some mention that the wide-angle lens has a narrower field of view than competitors, and the fast charging adapter must be purchased separately. Occasionally, complaints arise about switching from a different environment — especially Samsung users need several days to adapt.

When it doesn’t make sense

If photography is your number one priority and you want a 1-inch sensor with LOFIC technology or a mechanical telephoto lens with a smooth 75–100 mm zoom, you should look at the Xiaomi 17 Ultra. However, that starts from 35,999 CZK — a difference of thirteen thousand CZK. The Xiaomi 17 takes very good photos, but the Ultra photographs differently — with the ambition to approach compact cameras.

Also consider if you need a larger display for consuming video content. The 6.3-inch diagonal is an advantage for a compact phone, but for watching movies and series, the Ultra’s 6.9-inch panel might be more comfortable. And if you’re switching from Samsung and don’t want to learn a new environment, adapting to HyperOS might be frustrating at first.

Verdict: who it’s worth it for

The Xiaomi 17 is currently one of the best compact Android flagships you can buy. For a price under 20 thousand CZK, you get a top Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor, a triple 50Mpx Leica camera, a 6,330 mAh battery with 100W charging, and a compact body under 200 grams. This combination does not exist elsewhere on the market in this size.

Conversely, if photography is your main discipline and you are willing to pay an extra 13 thousand for more advanced optics, the Ultra version offers technologies you won’t find elsewhere. For everyone else, the basic Xiaomi 17 is a phone that can do more than most people will ever use.

Would you opt for the compact seventeen, or would you rather pay extra for the Ultra with a more advanced camera?
