There will be no Redmi Note 16! Xiaomi is reportedly changing the names of popular phones

  • Xiaomi is reportedly skipping the Redmi Note 16 series and will directly introduce the Redmi Note 17 – just like it did with its flagships
  • The top model will now be designated Pro Max instead of the current Pro Plus
  • All three upcoming models should also arrive on the global market

If you were waiting for the Redmi Note 16 Pro Plus, you can slowly forget about it. According to initial leaks, Xiaomi plans to skip the Redmi Note 16 series entirely and go straight to the Redmi Note 17. This is not the first time – the company did the same with the Xiaomi flagship series, where the number fifteen was directly followed by seventeen.

Pro Plus becomes Pro Max – unifying names across series

In addition to the skipped number, there’s also a change in model naming. The current suffix “Pro Plus” (or Pro+) is to be replaced by the designation “Pro Max”. Xiaomi is thereby unifying the nomenclature across its flagship and mid-range segments – the Xiaomi 17 series already includes a Pro Max model, and the same is planned for Redmi Note.

The expected lineup thus looks like this: Redmi Note 17 5G, Redmi Note 17 Pro, and Redmi Note 17 Pro Max. According to information from Xiaomi Time, three models with internal designations 2607DRA18C, 26073RA49C, and 2609FRA74C are currently under development. All three should also arrive on the global market.

Why the number sixteen is being skipped

The reason is pragmatic. Xiaomi skipped the number 16 for its flagship models to align numerically with Apple and its iPhone 17 series. In the marketing world, customers subconsciously compare numbers – and “Xiaomi 16” next to “iPhone 17” would look a generation behind. Xiaomi is now applying the same logic to its mid-range devices.

The Redmi Note 15 Pro+ series, however, only began global sales in January 2026, so only a few months have passed since its launch. Nothing is yet known about the specific improvements of the Redmi Note 17 – leaks focus exclusively on numbering and names. Specifications, prices, and the exact launch date are still up in the air.

One thing is clear, however: Xiaomi wants customers to navigate its offerings more easily. The Xiaomi 17 series for flagships, Redmi Note 17 for the mid-range, Poco X8 Pro for a powerful alternative – and everywhere the same naming logic with Pro and Pro Max suffixes. Whether this will truly help clarity remains to be seen.

Would you mind the name change for Redmi Note series phones?
